Good News For Those With Disabilities and Federal Student Loans
|

As part of my practice I assist those with disabilities to get their student loan debt forgiven.
It has now gotten much easier for those with
Federal Student Loans.
On Tuesday, 4/12/16, the Department of Education announced a new program that will identify hundreds of thousands of borrowers who are eligible to apply for federal student loan forgiveness.
To qualify for this program a person must be receiving Social Security Disability benefits and be deemed "permanently disabled" and unable to ever work again.
Starting on April 18, 2016, the Department of Education will start sending letters to about 387,000 people explaining that they are eligible for loan forgiveness. This letter will include an application that will simply need to be signed and returned. For this program a borrower will not be required to submit documentation of their eligibility.
Under this program. once the student loan is "erased", a three-year monitoring period will begin. If the borrower's earning status changes and increases above a certain threshold, he or she may have their loan reinstated and they will have to start making payments again.

Beware of Social Security Disability Application Scammers
|
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is alerting people about the dangers of identity theft, specifically in instances where people have started an application for Social Security Disability benefits.
Scammers try to get personal information from applicants by pretending to help complete applications.
For example, these scammers may ask you to give, or confirm, your Social Security number or bank account numbers.
Don't become an identity theft or phishing victim.

Do I automatically receive Medicare if I get Social Security Disability Benefits?
|
I am asked this question frequently:
Do I automatically receive Medicare benefits if I'm approved for Social Security Disability benefits?
Answer: Yes, you receive Medicare after you receive Social Security Disability Benefits for 24 months.
When you become eligible for Social Security Disability Benefits, the Social Security Administration will automatically enroll you in Medicare.
Social Security will start counting the 24 months from the month you were entitled to receive disability benefits, not the month when you receive your first payment.
Special rules apply to those disabled people with permanent kidney failure and those with "Lou Gehrig's Disease" (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).
