MENA Clean Energy Month in Review
CEBC News

Roundup by the GM
This month has seen another world first for the UAE with Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) receiving a world record-low bid of 2.99 cents/kWh for the 800 MW third phase of its 5 GW Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum solar project, announced on May 2.  The lowest bid was submitted by a consortium led by Abdul Latif Jameel of Saudi Arabia, Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV) of Spain and Masdar of the United Arab Emirates.

The announcement also contributed to engaging discussions and dialogue during CEBC's regional conference on Project Financing for Clean Energy held on 3 May in Dubai which was attended by more than 150 industry stakeholders.

CEBC's Board Election took place in April with a new board elected by the membership.  Further details are below and we look forward to welcoming you to a Members Only breakfast in the coming weeks to meet the incoming board, share ideas and hear your vision for CEBC and its board for the coming term.

Cheap Oil's Silver Lining for the Gulf
In June 2014, a barrel of Brent crude - the main benchmark of the international oil market - sold for $115. Today, less than two years later, the price is $45 - or even less. Not surprisingly, that collapse has been a massive shock to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf oil sheikhdoms, which rely on oil for some  85% of their revenues . And what they need to realize is that, unlike past price declines, this one will not be transitory. [Read more]

Boosting Biofuels: Sustainable Paths to Greater Energy Security
Substantial potential exists to expand both food and fuel supply in a sustainable fashion. This report examines sustainable paths for biofuel development. How much of the world's theoretical bioenergy potential can practically be harnessed? Amid great uncertainties about land use, crop yields and costs for biofuel conversion, it is hard to know.  However, policies that encourage higher farm yields, promote sustainable forestry and foster cost-effective conversion technologies will all help to boost sustainable biofuel production. This, in turn, will enhance global energy security, boost economic development and help to limit global climate change.   [Download Report]

A Bright Future for Solar Power in the Middle East | Stratfor
Deserts are seemingly obvious places to locate solar technology. In fact, the swath of desert stretching from the Atlantic Ocean, across North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, to the Persian Gulf has vast solar potential. But until recently it has not been economically feasible, or even necessary, to develop the renewable resource. In many areas, geographic constraints such as rough terrain have made solar projects impractical.  [Read more]

Renewable Capacity Statistics 2016
IRENA produces comprehensive renewable energy statistics on a range of topics. This publication presents renewable power generation capacity statistics for the last decade (2006-2015). Renewable power generation capacity is measured as the maximum net generating capacity of power plants and other installations that use renewable energy sources to produce electricity. For most countries and technologies, the data reflects the capacity installed and connected at the end of the calendar year. [Download Report]
