Mother's Day!
Hargrave Parent eNewsletter
"A leader has to be somebody who's getting people to do things which don't seem to make  sense to them or are not in their best interest -- like convincing people that they should work 14 hours a day so that someone else can make more money. "
-- Scott Adams (Dilbert)
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

If you missed Mother's Day this past weekend, you missed a wonderful Chapel service and a great Cadet led parade. They looked sharp, the morale was high with the Highlanders finding time to entertain at almost every turn.

During the parade, 80 Cadets earned recognition for achievement on the President's List, Dean's List or President's Commendation List during the 5th Six Weeks, and were eligible to receive their Academic Stars during the Mother's Day awards service.

National School of Character Badge
Hargrave is now a National School of Character.
If anything could possibly eclipse the excellent Mother's Day with the Corps of Cadets, it would be Hargrave's designation as a National School of Character by Character.org. Hargrave was the only school--public or private--in Virginia to be named on this year's list. There were only 67 schools PK-12 in the nation who met the standards for designation.

Hargrave has always been known for developing young men of character. Four years ago, we undertook to align our programs with the Character.org Eleven Pillars to better define what we do on a daily basis. Our Character Across the Curriculum Team, ably led by Sgt Major Hofer, rallied early this Academic Year and began the extensive process documenting what we do and how we do it. The culmination of this effort was two-fold: first, our application to Character.org and second, a full day on-site visit by one of the senior leaders from that organization.

The Hargrave Team has done a great job as is reflected in this designation! Your sons have always been at a school that strives for excellence as much as it demands excellence from its students.

Martin
Martin
Speaking of excellence, congratulations to Hargrave Mathematics department chairman Patricia Martin. Each year the Danville-Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce invites each public and private school in the county to nominate one faculty member. From this stellar group, the Chamber selects three Educators of the Year (lower, middle and upper). It's an incredibly tough field of competition and a great honor for Ms. Martin! We are extremely proud of her and her service to our Cadets! One final note, this is the second time in six years a Hargrave faculty member has been selected for this honor.

Yesterday, Hargrave Basketball Program Director Coach A.W. Hamilton brought in a candidate to meet me for our position as Varsity Basketball Coach. Coach Ben Veshi immediately struck me as a man who "gets it." He understands that it's more than "X's and O's" on the chalkboard and basketball. It's about building young men of character via the 'whole person' and ensuring they are ready to be successful in life.

Doing this by building upon our already successful varsity basketball program and taking it to the next level. With all that as preface, I want to welcome Coach Ben Veshi as Hargrave new Head Varsity Basketball Coach. Coach Veshi is arriving from Catawba College, which has an NCAA Division II college basketball program. He will coach our basketball summer camp. Welcome aboard!

On Tuesday, Hargrave underclassmen were recognized for academic, military and honors achievement during the 2015-2016 Academic year. Over 60 underclassmen were recognized during an expanded assembly format. Additionally, two Hargrave postgraduates were recognized for their appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Naval Academy. Four seniors were recognized for their qualification with college level ROTC scholarships. And, two underclassmen earned prestigious cash scholarships for the 2016-2017 Academic year.

Hargrave's exams began yesterday afternoon following the Underclassmen Awards assembly. There are six examinations with countless hours studying and working with Hargrave faculty this week. For the Class of 2016, examination week also means graduation rehearsals, Baccalaureate, the Final Formation, Senior Dinner and Saturday graduation. I'm looking forward the graduation of Hargrave's Class of 2016. They've been a great class.

After graduation, what is next? The Hargrave Parent Council has asked me to mention Summer School and Camp Tuition Auction. The auction is a key way they fund raise in the Spring for their initiatives. Many Parent Council initiatives directly support the Cadets. Please help them get the word out on this great opportunity for a potentially huge discount on a Hargrave Summer School and Camp tuition. The Summer School and Camp starts June 25, 2016.

Has your son re-enrolled? There are still a few days remaining to 'lock-in' your Tuition for Life (TFL) rate. If you are having trouble with any of the online forms--call the Admissions Team!

The 2015-2016 Academic year is concluding with real momentum going into 2016-2017. The next school year will see many initiatives started years ago becoming more pronounced. This will be very visible in athletics, but spans the academic and military sides of the Academy as well. This is a fantastic time to be a Hargrave Cadet.

Best regards,
