October 2014

Last year we started a new tradition with the senior class, a bi-weekly Senior Coffee in the Alumni/Development Office. Instead of going down to the dining hall for a snack at First Short, they stop by our office for coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and fresh donuts. At this week's coffee, the Class of 2015 sent out a greeting to the Class of 2014:
To the Class of 2014

Leader in residence at Harley
Jocie Kopfman '09 joined the Harley faculty this year as a leader in residence. She and her co-leader, Ja'Daiza Johnson, are working in conjunction with faculty members, Chris Hartman '93, Seth O'Bryan, and Terry Fonda Smith to promote programs and activities in The Commons. Read more about what they are up to by going to the latest Commons Blog.

Jocie is a 2013 graduate of the College of Wooster with a degree in Africana Studies. We are proud to have her back at The Harley School.
Chris Hartman '93, environmental sustainability coordinator, was featured in the September/October issue of the local Rochester magazine, Post

The article references how Chris grew up with "men before him who had passion for figuring out how things worked and how they could work better," and how this passion guided him to create Rochester's South Wedge Farmers Market, Headwater Foods, Inc., and The Good Food Collective, all staples in the Rochester local food movement.

New York City.
I recently posted a notice on the Harley Alumni Facebook page that the film lighting work of Ned Hallick '68 was being featured on the new Ken Burns documentary, The Roosevelts.

I exchanged several emails and a phone call with Ned and wanted to share a little about what he's been doing, just in case you would like to see any more of his work:

"The Roosevelts was a blast. I was involved in lighting and shooting the scenes at the Roosevelt historical locations: Hyde Park, Sagamore Hill, Campobello Island and Teddy's birthplace here in New York City... Most of my work on Roosevelts was back in 2010, which gives you an idea of how long it takes to make a series like this one... I have been extraordinarily fortunate to work with amazing artists and to listen to people who made history and science talk about their work and life."

Ned's work is also featured on the Steve Buscemi documentary, A Good Job: Stories of the FDNY, Alan Alda's Master Class, In Memorial 9/11, and the Holocaust film, Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport.

If you wish to send Ned your good wishes and find out what else he has been doing, his email is [email protected].
Another visitor from Australia

Daniel Epstein '08 stopped by Harley for a visit with his parents, Judy and John. The family, in town from Australia, were taking a family trip to the States before Daniel begins medical school. Daniel attended Harley in 1997 and 1998 while his father worked at Kodak. The Epstein's made a specific trip to Rochester in order to visit Harley and some of his former teachers, Mrs. Fenster, Mrs. Hanss, and Mr. Cinquino. Daniel was even given the opportunity to do a spur-of-the-moment lesson on Australia to Mr. Cinquino's class, which the students enjoyed immensely.
Get Involved
We invite you to come to Harley for a tour, to stop by a classroom, speak at an assembly, share lunch and your thoughts with students about college and career, or host an event. Alumni are always welcome.

Contact me anytime if you have any ideas on how to involve alumni at Harley. We want to share your stories, your knowledge, and your ideas with the community.

Sincerely,

Karen Saludo
