Get Involved During National Prevention Week

National Prevention Week (NPW) occurs the third week in May every year and brings together community members, schools, and prevention specialists one last time before summer to participate in awareness, educational, and action events related to substance abuse and mental health issues.

This year's overall theme, "Strong as One. Stronger Together." highlights the positive impact each individual can make in their community and how much more we can do when working together. Watch the "Strong as One. Stronger Together." video. During NPW, each day has a daily health theme. This year's themes are as follows:
  • Monday, May 16: Prevention of Tobacco Use
  • Tuesday, May 17: Prevention of Underage Drinking & Alcohol Misuse
  • Wednesday, May 18: Prevention of Prescription & Opioid Drug Misuse
  • Thursday, May 19: Prevention of Illicit Drug Use & Youth Marijuana Use
  • Friday, May 20: Prevention of Suicide
  • Saturday, May 21: Promotion of Mental Health & Wellness
The most effective way to support NPW is by getting your campus and local communities involved. Visit the NPW toolkit webpage  from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to find information on event ideas, a planning checklist, fact sheet, and more. SAMHSA recommends that two major components be incorporated into any activity: 1) the Prevention Pledge : share your word and story on the SAMHSA Facebook page and make a difference in the lives of others; and 2) "I Choose" Project : take a photograph of yourself holding a sign with your personal message about why substance abuse prevention or mental health is important to you, using an "I choose..." statement. You can also find print and web campaign materials and information on other partners .

By getting involved in NPW, you help achieve three primary goals:
  • Involve communities in raising awareness of behavioral health issues and in implementing prevention strategies
  • Foster partnerships and collaboration with federal agencies and national organizations dedicated to behavioral and public health
  • Promote and disseminate quality behavioral health resources and publications
Plan your event and submit the details to SAMHSA and NPW today!

DHS Fellowship Opportunity

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Office of Intelligence and Analysis (I&A) is currently accepting applications from state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) partners, including campus law enforcement, for the updated and expanded  Fellows Program (PDF)

The Fellows Program "provides a unique opportunity for SLTT partners to collaborate with DHS and the intelligence community in order to ensure threat information is effectively shared between all levels of government. Fellows will be expected to collaborate with their federal counterparts and SLTT customers through participation in a variety of intelligence functions, to include joint analysis and production, collection and reporting, and/or watchlisting."

Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in this program through three distinct paths:
  • DHS Office of Intelligence and Analysis
  • National Counterterrorism Center Joint Counterterrorism Assessment Team
  • Terrorist Screening Center
This fellowship is available for current SLTT agency professionals in mid- to senior-level positions who possess a working knowledge of terrorism and homeland security threats. The fellowship lasts one year in the Washington, D.C. area, with an option to extend for an additional year so the knowledge and skills gained from the fellowship may be applied in the Fellows' home jurisdiction through a local fusion center.

For more information or to apply for the fellowship, download the Fellow Program  information sheet and application . If you have questions about the program, you may contact  Gabrielle Parada .
