Westland Welcomes New K9

Westland, MI -

In April, the Westland Police Department retired its veteran K9 Officer "Friday." The Westland Police Department has since obtained and begun training its newest K9 Officer "Hemi".

"Hemi" was born March 28, 2012 in Gerbisbach, Germany and came to the United States in April, 2014. The Westland Police Department picked him up on May 15 and he is currently training in narcotic detection, tracking, handler protection, evidence searches, and building searches.

As K9 "Hemi" continues his training, he will now begin patrolling Westland streets with his Handler Officer Michael Little.

The purchase of "Hemi" and his training is completely funded from forfeiture funds seized by the Westland Police Department from illegal narcotic dealers.

"We are very fortunate to continue providing this service in our community," stated Mayor Wild. "Hemi will be a valuable addition to our Police Department and the residents of the City of Westland."
