BLUE DEVIL FOOTBALL CAMP OPENS MAY 26

A free, youth Blue Devil f ootball camp for boys in g rades 1- 6 is scheduled 9 to 11:30 a.m. May 26 and 27 at E.B. Hamilton Park, says Tift County High Head Football Coach Ashley Anders.

"Farmers for Football" is made possible by the generosity and support of Tift County agricultural businesses, Anders says.

The camp is free to all boys entering the first through sixth grade this fall. The camp is intended to teach fundamental football skills and is divided into two divisions -- grades 1, 2, 3 and grades 4, 5, 6. Instruction will come from Tift County HighSchool coaches and special guests.

Team competitions will conclude each day of camp.

Bus transportation will be available. Registration is required for all participants.

Anders says donations are needed and accepted to support this program for local youth. He says checks may be made out to the Tift County Touchdown Club.

AS 'READ ALOUD' INITIATIVE GATHERS STEAM

As the Tift County Foundation for Educational Excellence promotes Tifton to become the "Read Aloud Capital of the World," nationally known muralist Gale Hinton of Knoxville, Tenn., has returned this week creating murals promoting reading and community.

Hinton has created murals on walls inside the Tifton Housing Authority's community center and inside Quailwood Animal Hospital, and is completing her week at the local United Way's Betty Jo Roach Community Center , where the education foundation's Summer Accelerated Reader Program is based.

She previously created murals inside Len Lastinger Primary School, Annie Belle Clark Primary and the Tift County Pre-K Center.

As the acknowledged "Reading Capital of the World," Tifton is also seeking to be the "Read Aloud Capital of the World," building on the national Read Aloud movement.

"By encouraging our citizens to read aloud, we hope to further enhance the reading experience for young people, stimulating their imaginations , enlarging their vocabulary and fostering what we hope is a lifelong love of books and reading ," says Frank Sayles Jr. , education foundation president and a Tifton city councilman.

The 2nd Annual Prater Music Festival, named in honor of the late R&B singer and Ocilla native Dave Prater of the hit duo Sam & Dave, is Thursday through Saturday, May 12-14, in Ocilla.

Organizers have expanded the celebration to three days. New this year is a community worship service and an appearance by Macon musician Newton Collier, 71, a trumpet player in the original Sam & Dave band, who will be the keynote speaker during a tribute dinner.

"We're excited and happy that the Prater festival is returning to Ocilla for a second year," said Ocilla Mayor Matt Seale. "There are very few adults who haven't heard a Sam & Dave song over the years. Their music went global. We are extremely proud to be the birthplace of such a musical legend as Dave Prater."

Dave Prater was half of the Grammy Award-winning singing duo Sam & Dave. Their rise to international stardom produced such hits "Hold on, I'm Coming," "I Thank You," "Soothe Me," and their No. 1 hit "Soul Man."

TIFTON'S CHARLESTON CARTER NAMED COMMUNITY SERVANT

OF YEAR AT VSU EVENT

Charleston L. Carter, the court administrator for the Tifton Judicial Circuit, was presented the 2016 Community Servant of the Year Award at Valdosta State University's 15th Annual Multicultural Sankofa Celebration on Friday, May 6.

Carter, a VSU alumnus, coordinated the successful Dr. Shirley H. Hardin Paying It Forward Scholarship to be endowed in 2017.

Sankofa is an annual celebration of VSU's graduates and their academic accomplishments. The event was hosted by Valdosta State's African American Studies Department.

2 ABAC STUDENTS GET LEADERSHIP AWARDS

Gabe Strother, a senior natural resource major from Washington; and Amanda Stitt, a senior diversified agriculture major from Sharpsburg, both students at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, were recently presented Larry Allen Leadership Awards.

Dr. Jerry Baker, dean of ABAC's School of Agriculture and Natural Resources, pictured at center above, presented the awards, given annually to students within the School of Agriculture and Natural Resources who best exemplify the characteristics demonstrated and encouraged by Dr. Larry D. Allen, who was division chairman from 1994-2005.

The characteristics include solid academic performance, strong leadership skills, devotion to the agriculture and natural resources division and a genuine desire to improve the world.

FIRST-GRADERS VISIT

UGA TIFTON DAIRY

"First Grade Field Day" was held at the UGA Tifton Campus dairy last week. Local first-graders visited and saw farm animals up close and personal.
