Join the PJC Kids' Club this Summer!

Do you have kids, work with kids, or are you a kid at heart? Do you think it is important for people of all ages to learn about different cultures? Do you like sharing your culture with others? Consider joining the PJC Kids' Club this summer! The Summer Series kicks off this Saturday with an event to celebrate cultures in "The Americas" followed by "Africa" on July 26th, "Europe" on August 9th, and "Asia" on August 23rd.

We are looking for people to help plan and lead fun activities from around the world and share stories from their own lives and experiences. If you have lived in and/or have a cultural background in any of our featured regions, we would love to have you participate in our program.

Leaders are asked to share a kid's activity from their younger years or one that fits in with the theme. This can be teaching a song or dance, words in a new language, a song or dance, a story, a lesson in cooking a traditional dish, and much more. Events run from 2-4pm and are hosted at the Peace & Justice Center, 60 Lake St, Burlington.

The PJC Kids' Club was designed with the hope to create a more cultural inclusive world for our young generations to grow up in; a world based on reciprocal respect for diversity in which we leave behind the concept of a colorblind society and instead embrace and empower diversity! These events are open to everyone of all ages and is free! Please contact Kyle at (802) 863-2345 x6 or [email protected] for more information or if you have questions!

Haunted in Waziristan

By Michaela Herrmann, PJC Intern

The documentary Wounds of Waziristan reveals the damage caused by American drones. Waziristan is a federally administered tribal area in Pakistan. This area has a long history of being bombed by US drone strikes. Many believe that force is necessary in Waziristan because there is no real law. In the film, one schoolboy speaks about how a US drone struck his house and killed his sister-in-law and baby niece in 2010. He told Madiha Tahir, the film's director, that he feels guilty about being alive and is tired of innocent people being killed by US drones.

Obama admits that, "It is a hard fact that US strikes have resulted in civilian casualties...those deaths will haunt us for as long as we live". After each strike the media reports how many people died. Noor Behram, a Waziristan journalist featured in the documentary, argues that people can't tell how many have died in a drone strike because random body parts are the only evidence left behind. Kareem Khan expresses how he believes Bush and Obama are the greatest terrorists, because there is nobody worse than someone who could send drones into the homes of innocent people.

I highly recommend watching, Wounds of Waziristan because it's our drones that haunt the people of Waziristan and it's time we take responsibility for our actions.

There will be a screening of Wounds of Waziristan at the Aldrich Public Library, 6 Washington St, Barre, on Monday, July 14th, 6:00pm - 7:30pm followed by a discussion with CODEPINK's Medea Benjamin who will be joining via Skype. This is a FREE event. More information: Kyle at 802-863-2345 x6 or [email protected]

Screening of the new documentary: "Documented"
July 17, Thursday, 6-9pm at the Main Street Landing Performing Arts Center. FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

In 2011, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in an essay published in the New York Times Magazine. "Documented" chronicles his journey to America from the Philippines as a child; his journey through America as an immigration reform activist; and his journey inward as he re-connects with his mother, whom he hasn't seen in person in over 20 years.

In the US, immigration is always portrayed in a dehumanized way by painting a broad brush over who is and who is not an immigrant. Moreover, the narrative Americans are given, by our media, is that immigration is a Latino and crime issue. But the issue affects a broader population. The film and our conversation will address this by humanizing immigration through personal narratives from a wide spectrum of "immigrants."

Join us for an evening with community members, activists, organizers, and local organizations as we tackle immigration and immigration reform. Featuring a guest speaker for Migrant Justice.
