Progress Lakeshore honors projects, leaders

Local businesses, educators and economic development projects were in the spotlight May 3 during Progress Lakeshore's fifth annual awards breakfast.

Officials from the local economic development agency said the awards were aimed at recognizing the most influential leaders and most impactful development projects from the past year.

"The awards honor organizations and individuals for their efforts in creating positive change in our community," said Peter Wills, the group's executive director.

The event, which was held at Knox's Silver Valley Banquet Hall in Manitowoc, attracted nearly 150 people.

Rising Star Award

The Rising Star Award was presented to AgriSTAFF USA, a Kiel-based workforce recruitment agency.

AgriSTAFF provides workforce solutions to the agricultural, manufacturing, food processing and cleaning industries.

Owners Frankie Rodriguez and Becky Schmid became full-time employees this past year and have placed 50 employees into full-time positions in the past six months - a 500% growth in clients.

Neighborhood Development Award

The Artist Lofts apartment project at the former Mirro Plant 3 received the Neighborhood Development Award, which recognizes innovate real estate development projects that create jobs and increase the tax base. The project is designed to provide two- and three-bedroom apartments, community spaces and an art gallery in the former manufacturing facility.

Since breaking ground in December, it has employed 360 construction workers and has more than doubled the property's assessment, said presenter  Brett Norell, of Holy Family Memorial.

"(The project) served as a catalyst for economic development and demonstrated an innovative partnership approach between the public and private sectors," Norell said before presenting the award.

Corporate Investment Award

The Corporate Investment Award went to a pair of Manitowoc businesses, Americollect and Kaysun Corp. The award highlights businesses that have expanded and created jobs, while also being active in the community.

Americollect was recognized for its 20,000-square-foot expansion last year that created 27 new jobs. Kaysun was honored for its 20,000-square-foot expansion that created 30 new positions.

Economic Accelerator of the Year Award

The Economic Accelerator of the Year Award was presented to Dr. Colleen Timm and Thomas Ellenbecker of the Mishicot School District. The award recognizes individuals who have played a key leadership role in economic development and have demonstrated effective leadership in mobilizing the development of programs and projects.

Featured Speaker

Timothy Schneider presented "A Growth Story" at the event.

Schneider is the CEO of Investors Community Bank and also the founder and outgoing board member of Progress Lakeshore.

Investors Community Bank went public in 2015 has grown to be worth over $1 Billion. Schneider has been in the banking profession for more than 25 years, during which time he gained expertise in agricultural and commercial banking.
