Happenings at the Cross!
Record Crowd for Blessing of the Bikes

Blessing of the Bikes
Source, Aaron Palmer
Held on Sunday, April 24th, the weather provided perfect temps and glorious sunshine, and we had a record crowd for an awesome day at the cross! With approximately 4,000 bikes and 6,000 bikers, Bald Knob Mountain was bursting with excitement and inspiration from sunrise until late in the evening. Chaplains from the Christian Motorcycle Association provided prayers of blessing throughout the day, and great food, music and fellowship abounded.

bike volunteers Literally hundreds of volunteers gave many hours to make the event such a success, making it impossible to name them all. A new group to contribute to the event this year was the Cobden Masonic Lodge, who cooked 50 pork butts and hosted a work crew to shred them into BBQ for sandwiches from the kitchen. A big thanks to the Masons for this contribution, and to all the other groups, individuals, churches, families, and especially the Christian Motorcycle Association chapters -- the foundation of it all!
Blessing of the Cars May 14th

Blessing of the Cars If you're an antique car enthusiast, or if you'd just like to come out and see some great cars, make plans to attend the third annual Blessing of the Cars.  This event is free and there are no entry fees. T-shirts and food will be available for sale. Free Event Decals to first 150 cars. Live music from the band Stronghold.

The Blessing of the Cars was started by a few groups of Car Show enthusiasts from southern Illinois (from Murphysboro to Marion to Golconda). This is very much a family-style event, and it is in many ways a small car show at Bald Knob Cross of Peace. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. and concludes by 3:00 p.m. Drivers and passengers will drive their vehicle to the circle drive at the Cross for a blessing while in their car. Then they will drive their car onto the hill and park among the other cars. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs and pop-up canopies for protection from the sun.

Automobiles of all eras are welcome at this event: antique; collector's cars; show cars; convertibles; your special vehicle; all are welcome.
Meet Some Volunteers

Jean PhemisterJean Phemister, from Alto Pass, brings a wealth of experience in working with the public in a hospitality setting. Instinctively, Jean knows what is needed to make visitors feel more welcome and cared for. You will find Jean at the Welcome Center at different times, and in different roles, always working to provide the best service possible to our guests. Thanks, Jean!!

Gail SteckGail Steck, from Cobden, has become a familiar face in the Welcome Center on Sunday afternoons. If you live locally, you might have also seen her at Rendleman Orchards during their open season. Gail is phenomenally intuitive with knowing needs of visitors, and responding with answers before they hardly ask the questions! Thanks, Gail, for your great hospitality!
