Indiana Pork and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture
partner to feed the hungry at the Indiana State Fair
INDIANAPOLIS (July 29, 2014) Indiana Pork and the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) are partnering to feed the hungry at the Indiana State Fair. This partnership is made possible through a livestock promotion grant awarded from ISDA to Indiana Pork.

Indiana Pork operates three pork concession tents at the Indiana State Fair. Customers can choose to upgrade any entre to "Make It A Meal" by adding applesauce, chips and a drink for an additional cost. For every "Make It A Meal" upgrade sold at the pork tents in 2014, Indiana Pork and the ISDA will donate one ground pork meal to Feeding Indiana's Hungry (FIsH) - the statewide association of food banks. One ground pork meal is the equivalent to a quarter pound of ground pork.

"We are very excited about this partnership", said Emily Weikert-Bryant, executive director of FIsH. "Protein is in short supply at our food banks, so this is a great opportunity to provide a much needed food source."

Indiana Pork has set the ambitious goal to sell 30,000 meal upgrades which would result in the purchase of 7,500 pounds of pork.

"The goal to sell 30,000 meals is ambitious, but very attainable. With the support of fairgoers and our loyal customers, we can make it happen," said Sarah Ford, director of checkoff programs at Indiana Pork.

The livestock promotion grant money is being used for the promotion of the campaign before and during the fair, as well as the purchase of the pork after completion of the fair.

"The grant dollars are made available to benefit both livestock producers and the community, and this partnership is a perfect example of everyone working together toward the common good of Indiana and its citizens," said Ben Kenney, director of communications at ISDA.

The Indiana State Fair runs from August 1-17, 2014. Visit www.indianastatefair.com for a detailed schedule of events.
