Dear Friends,
What do you do to maintain a personal connection with Israel?
As Hadassah women we have the privilege of supporting Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem and helping Hadassah Medical Organization (HMO) pioneer medical research with worldwide impact. We take great pride in HMO's medical breakthroughs that improve health and happiness for tens of thousands of people around the world.
As Jewish women we also have regular opportunities to connect with Israel through the holidays that guide us through the seasons.  During this special time between Passover and Shavuot, when we recall our ancestors wandering the desert in a quest to reach the Promised Land, we can imagine that we are on our own journeys towards strengthened connections with Israel and our community.

Starting on the second day of Passover, the Torah instructs us to "count the Omer" (Leviticus 23:15) - the 50 days leading up to Shavuo t. On Shavuot, the Jewish people stood at Mount Sinai to receive the Torah. This momentous day required a seven-week preparation period.
This time remains an important period of growth and introspection. When I count the Omer each day between Passover and Shavuot, I reflect on my own journey towards the values of Torah and the promise of Israel. What am I doing to stand for my values as a Zionist? How am I helping the largest Jewish community in the world - our people in Israel?
I invite you to join me in thinking about your own relationship to Israel during this time of reflection.  Our calendar offers many opportunities to pause and think about what matters to us during this time. On May 4th we marked Yom Hashoah , Holocaust Remembrance Day, when we mourn for those who died in the Shoah and honor the heroes that emerged during one of the darkest moments of our history.
On May 11th we observe Yom HaZikaron , Israel's Memorial Day, to remember and honor Israel's soldiers who gave their lives in defense of Israel. The very next day we celebrate Yom Ha'Atzmaut, Israel's Independence Day. We bring ourselves from the depths of anguish to the joy of freedom and self-determination in our ancient homeland, in the modern State of Israel.
Even Mother's Day was designed to recall how our mothers and grandmothers helped shape our values. These strong Jewish women laid out the path while we walk into the future with our daughters and granddaughters. You can honor their memory with your support of Hadassah.
Let's use these days to count the Omer, examine our connections to Israel, and think about ways to advance along our own personal journeys towards Israel and the values we uphold as Hadassah Women.

Alan Lightman's grandfather was the family's undisputed patriarch: it was his movie theatre empire that captured the family to prominence in the South, his fearless success that both galvanized and paralyzed his descendants, haunting them for a half century after his death. In this lyrical and impressionistic memoir, Lightman writes about growing up in Memphis, including the music, the racism, the early days of movies, and the hilarious cast of Jewish relatives.

Wendy Wolfe Fine:
The Pearl that Slipped Its Shell
Relays the experiences of Jewish women in Iran   as a result of t he Islamic Revolution of 1979, specifically those of the Mizrahi family, who immigrated to the United States and carry on Iranian Jewish traditions. Fine's immersive installation incorporates video, photography and cultural objects to re-envision transformation and loss in the personal freedoms and cultural lives of Iranian Jewish women after the Revolution, when their country shifted from a secular state to a theocracy of Islamic fundamentalism.
