Experimental course on Contemporary South Asia kicks off its fourth year
Can entrepreneurial action effectively tackle major socioeconomic problems in South Asia? An innovative course taught by Tarun Khanna, SAI, HBS, aims to answer this question. Now in its fourth year, 'Contemporary South Asia: Entrepreneurial Solutions to Intractable Social and Economic Problems' is a university-wide experiment that is open to both undergraduates and graduates from all schools at Harvard. Over 120 students 'shopped' the course during the first week of classes.
Preventing gender based violence
On August 26 and 27, practitioners, researchers, government leaders, and academics from both the US and India gathered to explore how gender violence in South Asia can be prevented in a workshop hosted by SAI and the
Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, titled 'Gender, Civil Society, and the State in Contemporary South Asia: Preventive Approaches to Gender Based Violence.'
Exploring the potential of mobile technology
On Thursday, August 28, a group of Harvard alumni and SAI supporters gathered in Palo Alto for a conversation with Tarun Khanna, SAI, HBS. Professor Khanna discussed SAI's role as a bridge between Harvard faculty and South Asia, as well as his research on emerging markets and mobile technology. This was the second event in SAI's San Francisco Series, which brings Harvard faculty to the West Coast for events on a variety of topics related to South Asia.
Fall South Asia courses
Harvard is offering many courses this fall with South Asian content, including classes on Muslim Societies in South Asia, religious texts and traditions in India, and the study of India through narrative forms.
