Teenage Anxiety is On the Rise

Common core testing, AP, ACT, SAT... the list of standardized, "make or break" te sting goes on. The pressures of schoolwork, social life, sports and other activities put today's ch ildren and teen s under enormous stress.  In fact, studies show that one in eight children suffer fr om anxiety disorders, and according to the Centers for Disease Control Prevention, the prevalence of mental disorders in children has been increasing over the past two decade s.

Childhood anxiety can lead to sleep disturbances, cutting, impulsive behaviors and substance abuse as a means to numbing the pain.  Left unaddressed, anxiety becomes chronic and persists into adulthood.

This month, Dr. Chiappino addresses this growing problem and offers insight into how neurofeedback can help retrain the high-gear beta waves that often trigger anxiety.

Check out Dr. Chiappino's video and then call our office to take advantage of our May Mental Health Special. We're offering a QEEG brain map at a reduced price of $75 for children who are suffering with anxiety or depression. Schedule a "Q" to better understand the nature of your child's neurological condition and how neurofeedback training can bring balance to your child's brain.  631.265.1223.
Worried Sick About Your Anxiety & Stress?

Sweaty palms, a racing heart, butterflies in the stomach and insomnia... we've all experienced symptoms of stress at some point in our lives. As uncomfortable as they may be, these symptoms are a natural and helpful "fight or flight" response by the body to a perceived threat to help increase the chance of survival.  However, when the body is in a constant state of stress due to work, lifestyle or other highly-stressful duties, the prolonged release of stress hormones can weaken the immune system and physically damage our bodies, causing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, weight gain and damage to the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for short-term memory. For pregnant women, chronic stress can also cause an increased rate of miscarriage .

Acupuncture is an effective alternative treatment for anxiety and its associated symptoms and is highly preferable to potentially addicting anti-anxiety medications.  Acupuncture stimulates the part of the brain that controls emotions and encourages the nervous system to produce neurotransmitters that relieve anxiety and pain. It produces no side effects and can often bring about improvements in anxiety within a few sessions.

If you haven't already given acupuncture a try, now's the time. Call the office to take advantage of our special offer for private pay patients: $25 off your initial visit for stress and anxiety.

Many Vets Struggle with Suicidal Thoughts
military_fireworks.jpg

A recent study of 2000 veterans revealed that 14% experienced suicidal thoughts.  Of those veterans, 65% reported they had never received any mental health treatment.

Mental distress, physical health problems, drug and/or alcohol usage as well as exposure to trauma place veterans at high risk for developing suicidal tendencies. Social connectedness and counseling can help reduce these thoughts of suicide.   Recognize the signs for suicide risk:
  • Feeling helpless and hopeless
  • Feeling worthless, feeling like a failure, or a belief they do not deserve help
  • Hatefulness toward themselves
  • Believing they are a burden to others
  • Feeling that the pain of living is too much to bear
Our clinical psychologist  Dr. Andreas Michaelides has many years experience working with veterans and is offering $100 off the intake session for all veterans during the month of May. Call the office for more information: 631.265.1223.
Arthritis Awareness Month -- Relieve Your Pain  Naturally

A
rthritis doesn't only affect athletes.  Or the elderly.  Anyone at any age can be afflicted with the pain of arthritis.  It is a common disease that affects 1 in 5 Americans.

Pain meds are often prescribed to provide relief, but in actuality they do nothing to address the disease; in fact, meds taken in high doses to relieve pain can cause complications in other organs such as the liver. Natural therapies like chiropractic not only ease the pain and fatigue caused by arthritis, but also help decrease fluids in the joints,  maintain joint structure and mobility, and increase range of motion --without side effects.

Although chiropractic care plans are customized for each individual's specific health needs, a typical appointment may involve ultrasound therapy, electric stimulation to reduce nerve sensitivity,  muscle work, heat therapy and, of course, chiropractic adjustments to correct any misalignment.  A properly aligned body relieves pressure on the nerves and helps restore motion between the spinal bones.

Other non-invasive modalities for arthritis include acupuncture massage and yoga .  If the pain of arthritis is preventing you from living life to the fullest, contact our office to learn how we can help you move more freely with less pain, naturally.
