May Gardening Tip - Composting
Gardeners have often called compost black gold because it is so good for the soil. Compost can increase soil water retention, prevent weed growth, and increase crop production while reducing the need for fertilizer and chemicals. USU Botanical Garden Director and Master Gardener Jerry Goodspeed talked with Brook Walker on KSL's  Studio 5 last week about soil and compost. Watch the clip for some quick tips.

Featured Vegetable Varieties
Y ou Can Find at Our Member Plant Sale

Boy Oh Boy Tomato
Boy Oh Boy is a super-fast growing tomato variety, with fruit maturing just 74-75 days from transplant. It produces large beefsteak-type fruit, often over 1 pound, that are light red and slightly ribbed. The flavor is excellent and the flesh is solid with few seeds. Boy Oh Boy produces large, disease-resistant plants over a long season.

Homestead Tomato

Homestead is an old favorite known for its reliability to produce fruit at high temperatures. These 6 - 8 ounce tomatoes are firm, smooth, and meaty. Large, semi-determinate vines help shade fruit and protect from sunburn. Plants in trial plots produced an average of 50 pounds of fruit over a 6 to 7-week harvest period. This variety is resistant to fusarium wilt (F).

Big Boy Tomato
This best-selling tomato is a big, beefsteak-type slicer with smooth, bright red fruit and an aroma and flavor that everybody likes. It bears heavily in mid-season, yet the indeterminate vines continue fruiting (though not as heavily) until frost. Plants in trial plots produced an average of 80+ fruits over a 6 to 7-week harvest period. This variety is resistant to cracking.

Golden California Wonder Pepper
This smooth, blocky and blunt-ended fruit is thick-walled, very sweet, and mild. Maturing from light green to golden yellow, the peppers make a beautiful and delicious addition to salads and stir fries.

Gardening Basics

Sunbright Pepper
A beautiful bright yellow bell pepper, "Sunbright" will yield nice quantities of large, sweet peppers. Colorful and delicious, they'll add color to your salads and are perfect for stuffing; just sow them in a sunny spot with well-drained soil and enjoy a bountiful harvest. Sweet and bright yellow when mature, most of these blocky bells are 4-5 inches, but often this variety will produce some huge, 7-inch fruits that rival its namesake. The thick flesh is perfect for healthy vegetable party platters, salsas, and cooking.

Long Slim Cayenne Pepper
This 5-inch long hot chilli performs well and dries nicely. It produces an abundance of wrinkled fruit with thin flesh perfect for use in fresh hot sauces or dried and ground into cayenne pepper. It is one of the best peppers for seasoning pickles and salsa. This variety is good for deep freezing and perfect for adding a kick to a Bloody Mary or to vodka.

Big Red Pepper

The most impressive open-pollinated bell pepper we have found, this heirloom has thick, sweet, crispy flesh and thrives in cooler weather conditions. Enjoy Big Red at all stages, whether you are slicing them for pizza, or stuffing them with your favorite savory filling.

Yolo Wonder Pepper (pictured)

Yolo Wonder's large, uniform shape makes it ideal for stuffing. They are delicious grilled, and perfect for shish-kabobs. Peppers left on the plant will turn a beautiful, bright red, with more vitamin C than an orange. Pick green and red for a confetti of color on your plate. This is a good container variety.
