We've added five large umbrellas to the patio, but remember to bring shade. It will make your day easier and your customers happier.

For those of you who are not regular sellers, here are a few tips for making the market more successful.

  1. Presentation matters. Create some visual interest by using empty cardboard boxes covered with a cloth to add some height and dimension to your display. When everything is at the same level, people scan quickly and move on. 
  2. Price matters. Price your treasures appropriately. You can compare similar items on ebay and get a sense of what items sell for, but don't compare with what people are asking. Use the search filter to look at closed listings. That will tell you the real value of your items.
  3. Be prepared to negotiate. People love a good bargain and they will ask you for a better price. Don't be insulted when they do. It's part of the game and one of the things that make flea markets so much fun.
  4. Don't get mad when people don't buy. Often, people just browse and that's okay. If you are pleasant, friendly, and fun, they will buy from you in the future. Every interaction with a prospective customer can lead to future sales.
  5. Create a contact list. You never know when you'll be doing this again, but if you have the emails of people you talked with at this market, you can let them know when you'll be selling again. That helps you and them. Just make sure you don't share those emails, that you give people the option to opt out, and you don't use them for anything else. Everyone hates spam.
