Dear Friends,

April has been a busy month for SENG.  Production of SENG's Annual Conference is underway and registration is heating up. The Children's Enrichment Program is generating a lot of talk and enthusiasm for the segment entitled "All about Me" is high. Eight year old Ashton Baumgardner  helped us celebrate Poetry Month with his "Voices" submission, "What I Feel", whilst many of our 2015 supporters have returned to demonstrate their continued commitment with the purchase of an advertisement, sponsorship, or an exhibitor table for Conference 2016.  Special thanks to:

We are forever grateful to the Gifted community for their support of the SENG Mission and Vision. Through your generous donations, SENG is able to provide much needed services to gifted individuals and their families.

In gratitude,

Introversion: The Often Forgotten Factor Impacting the Gifted
by Jill D. Burruss and Lisa Kaenzig

You know at least one or perhaps are one: the child who immediately, when he comes home from school, escapes to the privacy of his room for time alone; the speaker who presents beautifully in front of 1200 people but who leaves a few minutes into the social hour because he says he can't deal with large groups of people ... more ...

Appropriate Expectations for the Gifted Child
by Arlene R. DeVries

Parents and educators working cooperatively can make a significant difference in the emotional and intellectual growth of the gifted child. However, for these children to fully benefit from this combined effort, parents and schools must recognize and work together toward similar goals. Their expectations of each other need to correspond to give the child appropriate guidance, thus maximizing the chances for fulfilling potential. The following aspects are essential to the healthy educational and personal development of the gifted child.

"Voices" - What I Feel
by: Ashton Baumgardner, 8 years old

What I Feel

I started out with eternal flame
never had to hide any shame
but now I'm acting like someone I'm not
so i'll have to give it all I got

I'm in a world where I don't belong
I'm in a world where I don't belong
I'm in a world where I don't belong

I've been trying to survive for so long
The person that I really am is gone

"Voices" seeks to share the creative works reflecting the gifted experience. Art, poetry, essays, articles, and stories are accepted from gifted individuals of all ages. Submit yours to [email protected]
The Self-Education of Gifted Adults
by Lisa Rivero

"Somewhere along the line of development we discover what we really are and then make our real decision for which we are responsible. Make that decision primarily for yourself because you can never really live anyone else's life, not even your child's. The influence you exert is through your own life and what you become yourself." ~ Eleanor Roosevelt (quoted in Wigall, 2003, p. 29)  More...

Title: Motivation: Revelations Plus Strategies for the Long Haul
Presenter: Dr. Joanne Foster
Dr. Joanne Foster
Date: Thursday, May 12, 2016
Time: 7.30 pm to 9.00 pm EST

"Motivation" has become a buzz-word, one that's often overused, bandied about, and even misunderstood. What is motivation? How can parents and teachers encourage and reinforce its development among children and teens? What strategies actually work-on a consistent basis, and over time? Dr. Joanne Foster addresses these and other important questions. She shares perspectives, understandings, and practical approaches, based on her books and on decades of experience working in the field of gifted education, thereby helping session participants make informed and sensible decisions in support of gifted/high-ability learners.

Joanne Foster is a featured speaker at SENG's 2016 Conference in Williamsburg. Join us July 22-24, 2016 for her presentations on: "Withering Heights? What To Do When Kids Engage in Avoidance Behavior" and  "When Change Is Challenging: Helping Gifted Learners through Transition Times".
