A Message from the Director

I love when the rhododendrons are in bloom on the campus. Having grown up in Yakima where the largest rhoddies I saw were about two feet tall, I always questioned the value of a shrub that was only pretty for a few weeks. Now that I am a Westsider, I see their value. The front of Madrona and the back of the Inn are ablaze in color.

There are new purple martin houses up across the lagoon, thanks to Arnie Marcus and Jan Viney. I saw our first tenants flying in and out of their new condos. I hope they eat lots of mosquitoes.

I hope you will join us on May 22nd for our Annual Meeting and dinner. We will be serving a crab/shrimp/clam and mussel boil ala The Crabpot Restaurant. It will be a unique event at Seabeck. The cost is $10 per person. What a bargain! Please contact the office to reserve your spot today.

Please help us out during the Seattle Foundation's giveBIG on May 3rd. Each donation given that day is matched by a grant from the stretch pool. That pool surpassed $1,000,000 earlier this week. You can click our page on the day or schedule your donation today and have it matched on the 3rd. I will be posting updates on our Friends of Seabeck Facebook page throughout May 3rd starting at midnight. Join the fun! Let's see how much of the stretch pool we can get!

Thanks for all your help. Summer is coming! We can't wait to see you at Seabeck soon.

Chuck

2016 Audubon Society Photography Contest

Of the 1000's of pictures entered, the winning photo was taken in Seabeck!

Grand Prize Winner: Bonnie Block

Species:
Bald Eagle, Great Blue Heron

Location:
Seabeck, WA

Snap Judgement:
Seabeck is a small town on the edge of the Hood Canal, in western Washington. In early summer Great Blue Herons and Bald Eagles converge here to feast on fish that get trapped in the exposed oysterbeds at low tide. While both species catch their own fish, the eagles are especially fond of harassing the herons for their catch. They charge at the herons, which at times release their prey with a loud squawk, dropping the fish back into the water. Though they're not always successful, the eagles seem to take pleasure in trying to steal a meal.

Bird Lore:
The majestic Bald Eagle and America's largest heron are both top-level predators, and they often pursue the same prey. Where concentrations of fish bring them together, clashes may erupt. In a direct standoff, the herons will usually yield to the eagles, but not without a noisy protest.

Participants: More than 1,700
Images entered: Nearly 7,000
Categories: Amateur, Professional, Fine Art, Youth
Entrants from: 50 states, 6 provinces, District of Columbia
