A Word from Sue...

Everyone needs inspiration and motivation to grow personally and professionally. VSU Continuing Education is the place to find some of that inspiration. Through our many class offerings, we can help spur you on along the road of lifelong learning.

Fundamentals of Digital Photography

You may be interested in learning basic skills to operate your digital SLR camera to take better photos for personal or career reasons. In either case, our Fundamentals of Digital Photography course will take you through the essentials you will need as you work toward your goal.

Explore auto settings, exposure control, how to choose ISO settings, and gain an understanding of color temperature, white balance, image noise reduction, and more. You will have lots of practice taking pictures using your new skills. A prosumer SLR digital camera with interchangeable lenses is recommended; an advanced digital camera with a zoom lens and aperture and shutter priorities is acceptable. You should bring your camera to class.

If you plan to pursue photography as a career, you can check out The Bureau of Labor Statistics website which shows recent occupational employment statistics including industry and geographic profiles for photography professionals.

Your instructor for the upcoming Fundamentals of Digital Photography course is Paul Leavy who joined VSU as university photographer in August 2012. Mr. Leavy began his photography career in 1982 as a part of Flash Professional Photography in Gainesville, FL, where his specialty was group, candid and portrait photography.

He graduated from the University of Florida in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism, specializing in photojournalism and minoring in visual arts. Paul was on staff with the Valdosta Daily Times after graduating until he joined VSU.

In the more than 27 years as a professional photographer, Paul has won many photography awards, including the coveted Photo of the Year from the Georgia Associated Press.

Outside of work, Paul enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, outdoor sports, and astronomy.

Fundamentals of Digital Photography runs 5 Tuesday evenings, April 1 - 29, 6 - 8 pm.

The Play's the Thing!

If you have ever wanted to take to the stage, now is your LIR players chance!  After a year's hiatus, the LIR Players are back. The group, led by Kathryn Smith, will meet every Tuesday and Thursday.

Play selection (to be determined) will be based on the number-and gender-of registrations. Rehearsals will culminate in a performance at the End-of-Year potluck on May 16.

Family Matters

The 2009 movie "It's Complicated" took a comedic approach in sharing the life adventures of the fictitious Adler family. Real life is often like this movie in that we have those hilarious moments; and, there is no doubt that in real life things can definitely be complicated - even in the best of times.

How well prepared are you to handle some of the complex milestone events you and your family will likely encounter?

Whether you are single, just starting out as a married couple, experiencing divorce or perhaps dealing with parents in their golden years - there are many resources available to help you navigate through the uncertainty.

As you might expect, the internet can be a good resource for information as in an article about managing stress by the American Psychological Association. The information there offers several  tips to get you and your family started down a healthy path

VSU Continuing Education offers a variety of 6-week instructor-facilitated online Personal Enrichment courses that can help you explore areas you identify as problematical.

Marriage and Relationships - Keys to Success ($99) can help you develop insights into the problems so many couples encounter in married life. This course will consider how to fight fair and arrive at a compromise, and the difficult question of when it's time for a relationship to end. About.com lists the top 10 causes of marital discord, but iterates that the problems can also be opportunities for growth, learning and accord.

Growing older is a part of life. Some aspects are joyful, some bittersweet, some frustrating, some frightening. You will learn what to expect, what to watch for, how to deal with physical and emotional challenges, and where to find resources to help in Assisting Aging Parents ($99)

Learning special communication skills, observation methods, and coping mechanisms to ease the burden for everyone involved crosses all socio-economic strata of society. Check out celebrity aging parent stories of The Oakridge Boys, singer Amy Grantand actor Kimberly Williams-Paisley.

Also consider these additional courses dealing with family situations:

Instructor-paced courses begin on a Wednesday in each month.
