W.N.C. Beef Cattle Commission strengthens the beef cattle market in the mountains through educational programs at monthly meetings.  In July, members go on a beef tour to learn about production in other states.  If you would like to become a member of this commission contact the W.N.C. Preserving Farmland for the Future- Transylvania Natural Resource Council
North Carolina is losing farmland at an alarming rate. There are  several important tools in place to help our farmers protect their land and preserve Transylvania County's rural heritage. Tom Fanslow from Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy and Josh Kelly from Mountain True will present on the state of farmland preservation in Western North Carolina. Spring Cattle Deworming Guidelines
Strategic deworming practices allow for the best protection against parasites in cattle.  Internal parasites such as lungworms and roundworms may be a significant threat to the health of the herd; therefore, prevention is key.  Parasite exposure in the spring begins in April for the Western North Carolina region.  Cattle usually contract parasites while grazing wet grass (from rain or dew).  Larvae numbers decrease drastically when the grass is dry and the soil temperature is less than 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Become a Teen Leader
Join the network of 4-H teen leaders across the state who are leading and serving in their communities!  Opportunities abound at the county, district and state levels. 

Check out Transylvania County's 4-H Teen Council's upcoming plans and consider sharing your knowledge/skills with younger youths or in the 4-H public speaking contests (including outdoor cooking competitions) and talent show coming up on May 20th.  Those who qualify  go on to the district contest at Western Carolina University on June 18.  Teens who compete at the district contest will earn scholarships to attend the state 4-H teen event in Raleigh July 15-19th.

All high school-aged girls who love science are invited to take a hands-on training to learn how to lead fun STEM activities with younger girls!  SciGirls Professional Development Training will be held in Transylvania County at the Transylvania County Extension Office, 98 East Morgan, Brevard on Saturday May 14, 2016, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.  Lunch will be on your own, register at http://ngcproject.org/transylvania-county-scigirls-professional-development-training.  There is no cost for registration.

Veterinary Feed Directive and Haulin' Ag Workshop
Are you aware of the new Veterinary Feed Directive?  If you are a raising food producing animals, it is imperative that you are familiar with this new directive issued by the Food and Drug Administration.  Join Transylvania County Cooperative Extension Service for a workshop addressing the Veterinary Feed Directive (V.F.D.).  
Following the V.F.D. discussion, a presentation will be delivered concerning transporting livestock safely through Farm Bureau's Haulin' Ag Program.  

When: May 26, 2016 at 6:00 P.M.
Where: Transylvania County Library Rogow Room
There will be a $5.00 registration fee and dinner will be provided.
