Meet the New Lawmaker:

Assemblyman Adam Taliaferro (D-3)

From the Cumberland County Clerk's office to the steps of Capitol Hill, five state lawmakers left their seats under the dome last fall to embark on new chapters in their political careers. With these departures from the State House, new lawmakers have stepped in to fill these vacant seats ... and begin new chapters of their own.

Assemblyman Adam Taliaferro (D-3)

Over the next few months, we will be introducing you to the newest members of the State Legislature in our "Meet the New Lawmaker" article series.

The first lawmaker to be featured in our series, Adam Taliaferro (D-3), was sworn in to the New Jersey General Assembly on January 29th. He fills the 3rd district seat left vacant by former Assemblywoman Celeste Riley, who assumed her new role as Cumberland County Clerk on January 1st.

Born January 1, 1982, Adam Taliaferro grew up in Voorhees, New Jersey. In 2000, he gained national recognition for his inspiring recovery from a paralyzing spinal cord injury sustained while playing on the Penn State football team. He went on to found the Adam Taliaferro Foundation, which provides emotional, financial and educational support to student-athletes who suffer catastrophic head or spinal injuries.

Adam Taliaferro graduated from Penn State in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Labor and Industrial Relations, and earned his law degree from the Rutgers School of Law - Camden in 2008. After working for five years as a lawyer in Duane Morris's Cherry Hill office, Taliaferro joined pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he currently works as a policy analyst.

A resident of Woolwich Township, Taliaferro was elected to serve on the

Gloucester County Board of Chosen Freeholders in 2011.

He won his second, three-year term as Gloucester County freeholder last November and was sworn in to office on January 2nd. Two weeks later, he was tapped by the Democratic leadership of Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland counties to fill the open 3rd district seat.

Assemblyman Taliaferro joins Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3) and Asm. John Burzichelli (D-3) in representing the 3rd legislative district, which covers parts of Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties.
