                                                                  29th April 2016

Dear Parents,

Firstly, a huge thank you for making our Open Afternoon so successful - it was lovely to see so many of you there supporting us.  The children seemed to have a good time completing the activities and we had lots of new visitors who were so complimentary about our school and our children.

Our school 'string orchestra' is beginning to sound confident and we are looking forward to our debut at the Teatime concert in a couple of weeks.  The choir too are preparing for this and the 'Sounds from the Stadium' event in July.  We have announced our plans for Speech Day to the children and we start practising the music as soon as we return.  The children are excited about doing a whole school show.  More details to follow!
I hope you all enjoy the long weekend.  Let's hope the weather stays dry and sunny and the few flakes of snow seen this week, are the last signs of winter!

Many thanks
Jan Caddy
Preschool and Reception were very excited as we set off in the beautiful sunshine for our Spring Walk at The Gregg School.  We explored the orchard and found buds and blossom on the trees, as well as discovering a mysterious hole and having lots of ideas about what creature could be living there.  We found lots of minibeasts in the herb gardens and enjoyed smelling the lavender and mint, before going into school for well-earned drinks and biscuits.  We then walked through the enchanting bluebell woods where we were lucky enough to spot several deer nibbling at the leaves which we were fascinated by and enjoyed watching for sometime.  A wonderful end to a lovely trip!

Form 6 this week
In English, we will be completing our classic fiction unit on 'The Hobbit' by writing our own 'lost tale' featuring Bilbo Baggins.  We will also be reviewing our reading comprehension and grammar skills in preparation for next week.

In Maths, worded problem solving involving all four number operations will be continuing alongside our arithmetic and reasoning work to sharpen our skills ahead of SATs.

In Science, we will be looking in more detail at the 5 Kingdoms of living things and how all life is classified into Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and species.

Also, we will be beginning a new history topic looking at the history of democracy which will complement our learning about making laws and how democracy works in PSHE
.
Form 5 this week
This week in English we are thinking about play scripts. We might even discuss that fellow Shakespeare.

In Maths, we are translating shapes and checking our angles.

In Science, we will be finishing off  our properties of materials unit by looking at irreversible changes.

In Art, we are continuing our seaside focus by printing fish. I just need to work out how to keep them still!
Coming up in Form 1
In Maths, we will be continuing to learn about addition and subtraction. Using pairs to add to 10 and use pairs to 10 to bridge 10 when adding and then subtracting with visual support e.g. 36 + 5, 57 + 4, 28 + 5  all cross over or bridge the next 10s number.
The children will investigate poems about nature for the next couple of weeks. They will read, discuss and recite verses from poems Daffodils and Who?  This week they will perform a verse from the poems with actions or musical accompaniment.
The class will begin to understand about food chains connecting the plants and animals in the Atlantic. They will go on to create a sculpture of the marine life found in the Atlantic Ocean.  If your child could bring in an ice cream/margarine or other tub which we will fill with gravel or sand to weight it for this sculpture it would be gratefully appreciated.
This Week in Preschool:

As our caterpillars are growing rapidly now, Preschool will be thinking about other types of minibeasts that we find in our environment. We might even be able to investigate the minibeast hotel that Reception built, maybe adding some of our own ideas for other minibeast accommodation.

Our theme for the week is 'growth in minibeasts'.

Phonic of the week is 'i'

Letters and sounds focus is 'body percussion'.

As we are into our summer term, please can you provide a named sun cream, and possibly a sunhat.  In order to help your child apply the sun cream, please complete a Medical Administration Form.
Coming up for Form 3
This week we will be looking at place value and money. We will place 3-digit numbers on an empty number line, order, compare and find a number between. We will round 3-digit numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. We will also understand place value in money, writing amounts in pounds and pence. We will use place value to add and subtract pounds, 10ps and 1ps.

In English this week, Form 3 will start a new topic looking at adverts on TV and in magazines and how we are persuaded to buy what we see. The children will do their own piece of persuasive writing on children's toys. They will focus on describing the features of the toy and persuading you either to buy or not to buy the toy. They will begin by doing collages of the different types of toys advertised on TV's looking through magazines. Towards the end of the week they will justify their opinions & create a TV advert.

In Science this week, the children will revisit some of the enquiries done in week two of the topic and will look to see how much the plants have grown that had been planted. The children will also get an opportunity to check how the rocket seeds they planted two weeks are coming along and write a small summary of its progress. They will measure the plant and record their findings.

In English, Form 2 will be continuing to focus their studies around rivers and the riverbank. They will be getting the chance to imagine they are a fish swimming in the river and describing their experiences! They will then be using their ideas to write some super sentences each beginning with a contraction. Later in the week they will be getting the chance to put all their ideas together to help them to write their very own haiku poem.

In Maths, looking at subtraction Form 2 will be both counting up and counting back using a number line to solve a range of problems. They will be doing this using the 'hops' and 'jumps' strategy with which they are already familiar. Later on in the week they will be doing some problem solving to test their understanding and ability to demonstrate this strategy within different contexts.

In PSHE this week Form 2 will be thinking about both their own and others' feelings. They will begin by considering how feelings can affect the different relationships they have with their family, friends or pets. They will be asked to creatively re-tell part of the story they have heard and relate to the feelings described. They will also be questioned on how they would feel or react in some of the different situations highlighted in the story.
