Energy News

Rhode Island's clean energy economy generated remarkable job growth over the last 12 months. Employment across the state's clean energy firms increased by 40% over 2015, far exceeding last year's projected growth of 17%. Clean energy jobs now support about 14,000 workers across the state.

Energy efficiency employment currently represents eight in ten clean energy workers; energy efficiency employment increased employment by 45%, adding just over 3,500 new jobs across the state.  Representing 14% of the clean energy workforce, renewable energy employment almost doubled over 2015. The workforce grew by 84% in just 12 months, creating 907 new jobs. Also, optimism regarding the state's current offshore wind energy project as well as third-party ownership and financing of solar projects may signal that renewable generation is on pace to continue this growth in the short term.

"Governor Raimondo and the General Assembly's collective commitment to a sustainable energy future continues to produce statewide economic growth and employment opportunities," Rhode Island Energy Commissioner Marion Gold said. "It's a worthwhile investment, which will not only produce jobs but also shrink our carbon footprint and lead private industry into new, exciting territory. There are a lot of exciting clean energy initiatives happening throughout Rhode Island, and we must continue to engage public and private stakeholders to advance our environmental goals while reducing energy costs for local businesses and residents."

The Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER), in partnership with Commerce RI and Smartpower, announced on March 31, 2016 that the Solarize Rhode Island Program is now open to businesses and homeowners in Providence, Warren, and Bristol. The program, now in its third year, has assisted nearly 400 local property owners transition to solar power and benefit from the related energy and cost savings.

"Rhode Island is on the cusp of becoming one of the hottest solar markets in the country," said Rhode Island Energy Commissioner Marion Gold. "Solarize Rhode Island is another tool in our belt that is increasing awareness of the many economic, energy, and environmental benefits associated with solar energy; the program is creating jobs, reducing consumer energy costs, and shrinking our carbon footprint."

As part of the Solarize Rhode Island Spring Campaign, participating communities will partner with qualified installers to offer discounted rates and education to property owners. The program is available to businesses and homeowners in Providence, Bristol, and Warren now through June 26. Solar 101 events will be scheduled in each community this spring; residents can sign up for a free, solar assessment of their property at the event.

Program Spotlight: New Energy Efficiency Program Announced for Block Island

On April 6th, the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER) kicked off the Block Island Saves Program to help New Shoreham businesses and year-round residents save money and reduce their carbon footprint. The program offers property owners free energy audits and incentives to increase their energy efficiency and reduce energy burdens.

The Block Island Saves Program extends energy-saving solutions readily available on the mainland to New Shoreham. Discounts and incentives are offered for lighting upgrades, air sealing, building and pipe insulation, and low-flow faucets and shower heads. In addition, guidance is offered on appliance and furnace improvements. The program comes on the heels of a successful pilot which involved 15 New Shoreham property owners.

"The Block Island Saves program is one more example of how OER is leading Rhode Island toward a more secure, cost-effective, and sustainable energy future," State Energy Commissioner Marion S. Gold said. "This important program fills a notable gap in statewide access to comprehensive efficiency programs and measures that reduce energy costs for Rhode Island homes and businesses, while creating jobs and reducing our emissions profile. Furthermore, it demonstrates that efficiency can often be achieved at a fraction of the cost of traditional supply."
