Save the Date-- October 25, Govalle Park

On Saturday, October 25, 2014, the FREE inaugural Austin BikeFest will showcase everything bicycle in Austin, Texas! Govalle Park on Austin's East Side will be packed with activities for all ages. Find out more at biketexas.org/bikefest

The day will open with a ribbon cutting of Austin's newest multi-use path-the Southern Walnut Creek Trail. U.S. Representative Lloyd Doggett (Honorary BikeFest Grand Marshal), Mayor Lee Leffingwell, and other local leaders will cut the ribbon and inaugurate the trail.

A family-friendly bike ride in three-mile, eight-mile and 16-mile distances entirely on this great new paved trail will follow the ribbon cutting, with hydration and snacks provided along the way.

After the ride, head back to Govalle Park for a full day of bike fun!

Group picture at the 2014 NCSL Bipartisan Bike RideOver 150 legislators, their families, and their staff joined BikeTexas and BikeMN staff and volunteers on Friday, August 22, for the 10th NCSL Bipartisan Bike Ride.

Legislative hosts for the ride were:
Texas Sen. Rodney Ellis (D-Houston)
President of the Minnesota Senate Sandy Pappas (DFL-St. Paul)
Minnesota Sen. Julie Rosen (R-Vernon Center)
Minnesota Sen. David Senjem (R-Rochester)
Texas Rep. Linda Harper-Brown (R-Irving)
Minnesota Sen. Scott Dibble (DFL-Minneapolis)

The ride was sponsored by Walmart, BNSF Railway, General Mills, Primal Wear, People for Bikes, Quality Bicycle Products, Siemens, and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The Bipartisan Bike Ride is a great way to let lawmakers see firsthand what it's like to ride a bike through a city, which translates to states taking greater steps forward to make their state bike friendly.

A man on a bike at San Antonio Siclovia

BikeTexas is very excited to once again offer free bike rentals to participants at Texas' largest open streets event. Over 70,000 people are expected to attend the next Sclova, running along Broadway to Alamo Plaza, with a new added route connecting to the east side Dignowity Hill neighborhood.

Select Federal Credit Union is providing generous sponsorship to BikeTexas to allow us to be there. Find us between the band stage and the farmer's market at Dignowity Park on the route's eastern edge. For more information, be sure to sign up for the San Antonio Area List on our E-Newsletter signup page here. We'll be sending more details like parking options and other awesome things going on with bicycling at Siclovia that day. On September 28, come play in the streets!

Two happy Baby Boomers/bike riders!

August 21 was Senior Citizens Day, and we join with others across the nation in honoring older Americans. We also celebrate that so many older people are choosing to ride a bike! Why ride once you're over 60? Read on to learn five great reasons.

What's the Scoop?

People riding bikes on a quiet road in Texas
You may have noticed that information about bicycle research and happenings flies fast and furious over the internet every day. We're always running across great articles we'd love to share, but even with our website and social media humming day and night, we can't keep up!

So, we've created a new weekly feature we're calling Friday Reading. Every week, we'll collect all those great links into one place just for you and then publish it on Friday morning so you have all weekend to get caught up. Ready to read? Check out our first few posts to get started, then head to biketexas.org on Friday morning (or look at our Twitter feed) for the next one.
Texas Transportation Commission meeting in Dallas.
Texas Transportation Commission meeting in Dallas.
Many of you responded to our call for comments to TxDOT regarding the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funds that are intended for bicycling and walking projects.

On August 28, the Texas Transportation Commission (TTC) met in Dallas and we took the opportunity to address the TTC on the TAP comments. Earl Erickson presented letters to the Commission from several mayors in East and Northeast Texas who support TAP funding being kept where it is. Joe Pitchford spoke on behalf of the Northeast Texas Trail, and BikeTexas Executive Director Robin Stallings gave TTC members copies of petitions in favor of TAP funding being spent for TAP purposes.

We expect an update in the next few weeks, so keep an eye out for an announcement when it comes.
