Senator Harkin Receives Outstanding Leadership Award

Senator Tom Harkin received the Outstanding Leadership Award at a social event following the Harkin Americans with Disabilities Act Roundtable on July 25. The award was presented by Michele Meadors, Ms. Wheelchair Iowa 2014, on behalf of Iowa's disability and aging community. ASK Resource Center, along with 47 other disability and aging organizations across Iowa signed on to the award.

The event was put on by the Harkin Institute at Drake University in Des Moines. According to Dawn Francis, one of the organizers of the event, "it was a great event, and Senator Harkin was very touched to receive the award." It is believed that the award will be permanently displayed in the ADA display area of the Harkin Institute.

Integrated Health Homes Survey

As an effort of the Iowa Olmstead Consumer Taskforce in collaboration with other advocacy groups, Disability Rights Iowa is reaching out and collecting information to reflect both the positive experiences and difficulties Iowans are facing with Health and Human Service systems change. With this information, they plan to continue to advocate for increased access to needed services. The brief survey contains questions regarding Iowa's Health and Human Service System changes with Integrated Health Homes.  Survey participants can be a person with a disability, a family member, caregiver, friend or professional.
