Temporary Public Art Project Proposals 

The City of West Hollywood through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission and Art on the Outside Subcommittee reviews temporary public art projects on behalf of the City in the fields of visual and performance art, film/video, architecture, design, and emerging/multi-disciplinary practices. West Hollywood Library - Cultural Programming Opportunities The West Hollywood Library campus provides opportunities for Cultural programs and displays within the public areas of the West Hollywood Library Facility. Organizations and individuals are welcome to apply. Proposals are reviewed by a committee using the criteria as described in the guidelines. WHAP! Lecture Series "Political Art Across the Disciplines," November 7

The City of West Hollywood and the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Master of Arts (MA) program in Aesthetics and Politics present the West Hollywood Aesthetics and Politics lecture series (WHAP!). On Friday, November 7, 2014, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., WHAP! will host an interdisciplinary conversation featuring CalArts faculty Berenice Reynaud (Film/Video), Sam Durant (Art), and Stephen Koplowitz (Dance) with Martin Plot as discussant. The conversation will take place at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Admission is free. Trans Experience L.A., November 8

Join the City of West Hollywood for Trans Experience L.A., a Trans history project sponsored by the City's Transgender Advisory Board featuring Shirley Bushnell and Masen Davis.

The Golden Age of Broadway with Sonny Fox, November 8

The City of West Hollywood and Friends of the West Hollywood Library will present a very special event to highlight clips of famous songwriters of the Broadway stage. Alan Jay Lerner, Kander and Ebb, Sheldon Harnick, Yip Harburg, Charles Strouse, and Burton Lane are just a few of the artists who will be featured in a selection of clips during The Golden Age of Broadway: Lyricists and Composers, hosted by Sonny Fox.

The event will take place on Saturday, November 8, 2014, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood's City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room (located next to Jones Coffee) at West Hollywood Library, 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Free validated parking will be provided at the West Hollywood Park five-story public parking structure. Light refreshments will be served; the event is free and open to the public.

This annual fundraiser raises money for local charities with a design fashion show. SOLD OUT.

 

Celebrating New Works: Red Train Caf�, November 9

The Join Celebration Theatre and the City of West Hollywood for a staged reading of a brand new work celebrating the LGBTQ experience. In Red Train Caf�, a young composer on his way to Africa sees his boyhood idol, a James Baldwin-like figure in a Parisian caf�. He entreats the waiter to send the older man a drink, assuming an encounter with the idol will change his life. It does in unexpected ways - where the composer, the older writer, and even the waiter confront their fears, tribulations and hopes. The reading will take place on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at Plummer Park, located at 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard, in Rooms 1 & 2. Veterans Day Ceremony, November 11 

Please join the City of West Hollywood in honoring members of the United States Armed Forces who have served our country, and honoring those who continue to serve. A brief ceremony will be held on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Sal Guarriello Veterans' Memorial, located at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Holloway Drive. Colibri 2014 Instrumental Competition, November 14-16 and Colibri 2014 Vocal Competition, November 22-23, 2014 

The Unity in Diversity Arts Foundation invites all music enthusiasts to attend the seventh international young performers competition: Colibri, featuring many international participants. 

The instrumental music competition's youngest performers will compete on Friday, November 14, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Then, on Saturday, November 15, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., there will be a performance marathon. The Gala Concert and prize award ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 16, 2014 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The vocal competition will take place on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 10 a.m. The Gala Concert and prize award ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 23, 2014 at 12 p.m.

WHAP! Fall 2014 Conference "This Isn't About the Future: Black Digital Culture Now," November 15 

The City of West Hollywood and the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) Master of Arts (MA) program in Aesthetics and Politics present, in connection with the West Hollywood Aesthetics and Politics lecture series (WHAP!), a yearly Fall conference curated by MA faculty Douglas Kearney, which continues the CalArts MA program's investigation into contemporary digital culture - this time from a Black Studies perspective. On Saturday, November 15, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., the conference will include a variety of panel discussions, which will take place at the West Hollywood Library Community Meeting Room, located at 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. Admission is free. Validated parking will be provided at the West Hollywood Park five-story public parking structure.

Celebrating New Works: Sisters Three, November 18

Join Celebration Theatre and the City of West Hollywood every third Tuesday of the month for staged readings of brand new works celebrating the LGBTQ experience. Sisters Three by Jami Brandli features the Bronte sisters, in the modern day. Due to the death of their brother, Charlotte has dropped out of society and joined a commune on Gondol Island and Emily and Anne build a canoe to rescue her. In this off-center dramedy about family, social media, and fame, individual secrets and desires are revealed which could tear the sisters apart. 

The reading will take place on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood's City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room (located next to Jones Coffee) at West Hollywood Library, 625 N. ONE Archives: Montezland, November 19

In conjunction with the exhibition Montezlandat the ONE Gallery, the ONE Archives with support from the City of West Hollywood will present an evening screening of film and video work exploring Montez's legacy and influence on LGBTQ culture, with a zine launch produced by Conrad Ventur in conjunction with the exhibition. Mario Montez was one of the Warhol superstars, appearing in thirteen of Andy Warhol's underground films from 1964-1966. Mr. Montez has been the subject of seminars and screenings at Columbia University, the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of the Moving Image in New York.

The event will take place on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. at the City of West Hollywood's City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room (located next to Jones Coffee) at West Hollywood Library, 625 N. Transgender Day of Remembrance, November 20  

The City of West Hollywood and its Transgender Advisory Board will celebrate Transgender Awareness Month in November by holding events in the City of West Hollywood and throughout the local area. Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed all across the world on November 20. Join us for an outdoor reception hosted by the City's Transgender Advisory Board that will include speakers from the community, City representatives, various transgender performers, and will conclude with the reading of the names of transgender people who have passed due to transgender hate crimes. The Transgender Day of Remembrance event will take place on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at the Auto Court of the West Hollywood Library, located 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. There will be a candlelight march at 8:30 p.m. Validated parking will be available in the West Hollywood Park five-story parking structure. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served. In addition, Spanish and sign-language interpretation will be available.

Transient Exhibition, November 20 to 24  

In conjunction with Transgender Awareness Month, Transient is a curated group show by Kean O'Brien featuring Zackary Drucker, Oli Rodriguez, Heather Cassils, Pillar Gallego and Niv Acosta that develops ideas about sharing and recognizing visibility within and outside of the transgender community. Built inside two U-Haul trucks, the show creates a space where trans/queer work can be seen in relationship to each other, instead of reconstructing that familiar space of opposition to the other.

 

The opening ceremony of Transient will take place on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at 6 p.m. at the West Hollywood Library, located 625 N. San Vicente Boulevard. From there the exhibiton will travel to various sites within and outside of West Hollywood with a final panel discussion on Monday, November 24 in the West Hollywood City Council Chambers. West Hollywood Park Phase II Design Expo, November 22 

Join the West Hollywood Park Phase II architects and design team as they present updates on the design development of the new Aquatic and Recreation Center and park improvements. Various booths will be set up to gather public feedback on options for landscaping, adult fitness equipment, park furniture, play equipment, and much more.

AIDS/Lifecycle Presents World AIDS Day Candlelight Vigil & Celebration of Life, November 30

 

 

The City of West Hollywood and AIDS/Lifecycle will hold a candlelight vigil in honor of World AIDS Day.

The vigil will take place on Sunday, November 30, 2014. It will begin at 5:30 p.m. at West Hollywood Park, located at 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard, and end at Micky's West Hollywood, located at 8857 Santa Monica Boulevard.
