Happy Independence Day!

As we approach the Independence Day holidays and the celebrations we will share with family and friends, it occurs to me that the Carolina Recycling Association is mid-way through 2014 and we have cause for celebration as well.

We held the largest conference we have ever put on at the Omni Grove Park Inn this spring.  Not just large though...successful too!  Our members elected a well-qualified Board of Directors at the conference with a mix of seasoned returning members and enthusiastic new members.

Earlier this month, we held our Annual Planning Retreat.  Officers for FY14-15 were elected during the retreat.  We are pleased to have returning officers and committee chairs as well as new ones stepping up into new roles.  Coming back from this annual retreat I am greatly encouraged and excited, not just due to the work accomplished there, but by the spirit of cooperation and the can-do attitude that was a part of all that was done.

The CRA Committees and Councils are ready to continue their important work and to grow the membership and influence of the CRA as a whole.  More Recycling Networking Council meetings and events are planned for the coming year and work has already begun on our 25th Anniversary Conference to be held next spring in Myrtle Beach.

We have a good mix of personality, skill, talent and experience in the staff and in the leadership.  We have a spirit of cooperation in place with our partners and are exploring synergies with those not yet affiliated.  We are hard at work creating opportunities for each of us to prosper through our membership and activity.  We have an atmosphere of dedicated teamwork and we have you.  Now I say that is cause for celebration!

May you and yours have a safe and happy 4th of July,

Recycling Industry Brings $13 Billion Boost to SC Economy

The recycling industry in South Carolina brings a $13 billion boost to the state's economy annually - double the estimated impact of recycling in 2006 - according to a new report.

Despite the recession, the total economic impact of recycling activities in the state grew nearly five percent annually to double its impact in eight years, while recycling's benefit to jobs across South Carolina grew to 54,121 jobs impacted - a 44 percent increase since 2006.

Moreover, the state's recycling industry expects additional growth this calendar year. Nearly 64 percent of survey respondents indicated they are planning an expansion in 2014 with an average of 3.5 employees each, or approximately 1,162 new employees added to payrolls this year. The average annual growth rate predicted for the industry is 19 percent.

"While many recognize the environmental benefit of recycling, these results show the strong connection between recycling and business," said Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt. "As the business agency for South Carolina, Commerce will continue to provide support for the more than 500 companies in the state that are engaged in recycling activities and making sizeable contributions to our state's economy."

Along with the growth of recycling's impact to the economy, participation in recycling also has grown. The state's recycling rate increased to 31 percent in 2013 from 22 percent in 2009, with each South Carolinian on average recycling 1.59 pounds per day.

"Last year South Carolina recycled almost 600 pounds per person. It is an extraordinary number and is only growing thanks to the grass roots dedication of our businesses and local governments in partnership with DHEC," said Catherine Templeton, director of SCDHEC. "As a result, local governments saved more than $53 million in disposal costs last year alone and have earned more than $67 million in the last four years."

"With an annual economic impact of $13 billion and over 520 companies across the state, there's no denying that recycling in South Carolina is making treasure out of trash," remarked Tina Huskey, chair of RecyclonomicsSC.

CRA Partnered with SERDC for North Carolina Legislative Day

CRA partnered with the Southeast Recycling Development Council on June 4 to hold the 2nd Annual North Carolina Recycling Day at the NC State House in Raleigh, NC.

There was a great turn out with forty-five attendees from the recycling industry joining the legislative day breakfast. Thirty-five registrants also participated in a webinar with SERDC the week prior to discuss the legislative process and how to connect with their delegates. The attendees had appointments with their delegates to communicate the value recycling brings to North Carolina.

Envision Buyer Bets on Growth in Recycled Plastics Market

The company that purchased a pair of plastics recycling firms this week says its move was driven by increasing demand for recycled content in the packaging space.

Atlanta-based Consolidated Containers Company (CCC) announced Tuesday it had acquired Envision Plastics and Ecoplast Corporation, separate recycling companies that had common ownership. Both firms have a significant presence in the plastics recycling sector - Envision in post-consumer HDPE and Ecoplast in a variety of post-industrial resins - and according to a leader at CCC, the packaging giant made the deal because more of its clients are looking to boost their use of recycled material.

"CCC views sustainability and recycling as a megatrend in our industry that will only increase with time," said CCC's chief financial officer, Richard Sehring, in comments to Plastics Recycling Update. "Customers, consumers and retailers are all looking for greater recycled content in products, and this strategic investment allows CCC to increase access to such products."

Sehring said CCC was a customer of both firms in the past, and the strategy going forward will be to maintain the status quo on the operations front. "Both Envision and Ecoplast will continue to operate as they have historically as Envision and Ecoplast," said Sehring. " We want to ensure that Envision and Ecoplast retain the confidence and trust of their current customers and that potential customers are comfortable with the talented staff at [the two firms]."

Sehring, who would not disclose the terms of the deal, added that CCC sees opportunities to "accelerate" a number of patented technologies that have been developed by Envision and Ecoplast. Among those properties, according to Sehring, are Envision's "Prisma" colorant process and Ecoplast's food-grade HDPE offering EcoPrime.

Envision operates out of two facilities: one in Reidsville, North Carolina and the second in Chino, California.

CRA 25th Annual Conference - Save the Date!

If the summer heat and humidity has got you wishing for a cool drink on the beach, indulge yourself with thoughts of the warm sands at the Embassy Suites Kingston Plantation in Myrtle Beach, SC. The CRA will be pulling out all the stops for our 25th Anniversary Conference and Tradeshow in Myrtle Beach from March 23 - 26, 2015.

Planning is already underway and there are many ways that you can get involved to make this an anniversary to remember. The Conference Planning Committee is recruiting volunteers to help with the program and speakers, sponsors and exhibitors, entertainment, awards, auction, golf tournament and many other aspects that go into planning the largest recycling trade show in the Southeast.

Wastequip Expands Manufacturing Footprint with New Facility in the Carolinas

Wastequip announced the opening of its newest manufacturing facility in Blacksburg, SC - the second in a series of expansions to be announced this year.

After extensive research, Blacksburg was selected because of its easy access to the I-85 corridor, making it a prime location for customers throughout the Southeast.

The opening of the South Carolina facility is just one of a series of strategic Wastequip manufacturing expansions designed to boost capacity to better meet customer demand. The ability to locate Wastequip manufacturing facilities in areas of key customer density will mean even faster service, greater product availability, more competitive freight rates, and the convenience of on-site pick-up.

Policy Tools Driving Recycling: Disposal Bans, Recycling Mandates and Pay-As-You Throw

July 23, 2014 12:00 - 1:30 pm EDT - Register

Interest is growing in increasing recycling program performance and raising recycling rates for post-consumer packaging and printed paper. At the same time, so has interest in exploring the use of policy tools to further drive recycling and the use of best practices by service providers. In particular, industry stakeholders and state officials are taking a second look at disposal bans, recycling mandates and Pay-As-You-Throw policies and wondering if their enactment elsewhere may make sense.

Key findings of a recent national policy research conducted by Reclay StewardEdge Inc. on behalf of the Carton Council of North America (CCNA) will be presented and experienced state government representatives now managing programs under such policies will share their perspectives and experience.

Expanding Opportunities in Film Collection
Tuesday, August 19th, 2014 1:00 - 2:00 pm EDT - Register

More than half of the film collected for recycling in the U.S. was exported in 2012. With the implementation of tighter restrictions on the import of scrap plastic into China, domestic markets want to let recyclers know that strong demand remains-provided the quality is good. The key is to know your plastic film markets and to collect for value. Learn about the depth in demand for scrap plastic film and the tools available on plasticfilmrecycling.org to support the collection of high quality material. Speakers include Nina Bellucci Butler, Moore Recycling Associates; Dave Heglas, Trex; and Jim Feeney, Wisconsin Film & Bag.
