Stories of Innovation and Change
Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Ernest L. Arbuckle Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, and award-winning business leader and author, will kick-off this year's conference with a powerful session that will spark your creativity and leave you inspired.
A leadership expert, Ms. Kanter's experience spans both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors, where she specializes in strategy, innovation, and leadership for change. During the conference's opening session, she'll share her experience and insight about new and emerging ways to better meet your mission by investing in your organization's human capital.
Ms. Kanter is the Chair and Director of the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative; regularly advises CEOs of large and small companies; has served on numerous business and non-profit boards; and has been repeatedly named to lists of the "50 most powerful women in the world" (Times of London) and the "50 most influential business thinkers in the world" (Thinkers 50). Take the MA Nonprofit Advocacy Survey to make sure your voice is heard
MNN, in partnership with the Center for Social Policy at the University of Massachusetts Boston, is conducting a survey of nonprofit leaders across the state to gain a better understanding of nonprofit public policy involvement in Massachusetts. Even if your organization is not currently involved in advocacy- we want to hear from you! Take the confidential survey now.
With questions related to staff roles and responsibilities, your board's interest and understanding of advocacy, and your overall feelings towards lobbying, the insight collected will be particularly helpful to us as we craft a public policy agenda for the state's nonprofit sector. If you are a member of MNN this survey may look familiar -you probably received it earlier this month- and we once again encourage you to complete the survey if you have not already done so.
Everyone who completes the survey will be entered to win a $250 American Express gift card. Take the survey.
Why the #IceBucketChallenge Worked, the Takeaways & More
It's not surprising that the #IceBucketChallenge became popular, given its lighthearted nature and a dose of healthy competition. But the omnipresent viral campaign's staying power and tangible impact has surpassed many online sensations and is proving the naysayers wrong. To date, the #IceBucketChallenge has raised millions of dollars and generated awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating disease for which there is currently no cure.
Read MNN's overview of the #IceBucketChallenge here.
If you're like most nonprofit professionals, you're probably thinking "why didn't WE think of that?!" (Although let's be honest, if your development director asked you to pour ice water over your head and video tape it in the name of fundraising you would have thought they were crazy.) Luckily, we can learn from the success of this hash-tagged wonder. As Julia Campbell explains in What the Social Media Success of the ALS #IceBucketChallenge Can Teach Nonprofits, there are four reasons the campaign caught on so quickly (view the full article):
1) Old-fashioned peer pressure.
2) It's very shareable (and makes you look good).
3) It's easy to do.
4) It specifically requires word of mouth.
As MarketingProfs.com points out: the trick isn't to copy or mimic a great campaign; it's to learn from it and incorporate the lessons into future ideas. While many nonprofits will unfortunately never have campaigns as successful as the #IceBucketChallenge, the takeaway is that creativity, and thinking outside the box, is key to successful fundraising and building awareness.
We hope next time someone your staff has a seemingly over-the-top idea, you stop to think hey, that just might work.

NONPROFIT 411:
How nonprofits can increase voter engagement
Nonprofits are trusted and respected in their communities. Because of the populations nonprofits reach, our voter engagement efforts have the potential to significantly contribute to the diversity of the electorate, particularly among groups that historically participate at lower rates.
Learn about the wide range of nonpartisan voter engagement activities nonprofits can conduct to educate the public and help voters participate in elections, and why it's a good idea to use August and September to focus on voter registration efforts before Massachusetts' voter registration deadline on October 15.
