CAWA Thanks Members Who Have Been Supportive for Over Fifty Years!
CAWA was founded in 1955 and the following members have been supportive for over 50 years. The Association sends its gratitude to these members and thanks them for their gracious support throughout the years. The long term members are: Chester Avenue Brake (Phillip Diebel); Davis Auto Parts (Kenneth Blanton); Eddings Brothers Auto Parts (Ron Eddings); General Parts , Inc. (David McCartney); Hust Bros., Inc. (Roy Lanza); Kelley's Service Inc., (Gary Rudolph); Reno Brake, Inc., (Mark Evasovic) and Santa Rosa Auto Parts (Mike Matthews). The Association appreciates your support.
Telematics the Industry's Next Huge Issue
See the enclosed article (here) by our partners at the Auto Care Association which begins to frame the issue for the automotive aftermarket industry . Recall, the California AAA organizations introduced a telematics bill this year and it stalled in committee. CAWA, CARE and the Auto Care Association stayed neutral on the bill and felt it needed further development before introducing it as a legislative proposal. For more information on telematics contact our legislative advocate, Gary Conover at [email protected] or 916.233.9655.
CAWA Conducts a Legislative Seminar for NAPA Store Owners in Arizona
Joining the owners as part of the NAPA Distribution Center's program in Phoenix, CAWA President & CEO, Rodney Pierini, Arizona Legislative Advocate, Stuart Goodman and Senator John McComish provided the attendees with perspectives on the need for Association government affairs, a preview of the upcoming elections and what could be expected from the 2015 legislative session in Arizona. Should your company want a similar presentation in the future, contact our Director of Government Affairs, Jennifer Zins at [email protected] or 916.871.0603.
Gas Prices Are Projected to Increase in California on January 1, 2015
CAWA recently joined Fed Up at the Pump, a grassroots coalition of businesses, consumers and advocates who want to halt a hidden gas fee which would force Californians to pay an additional 4-15 cents or more per gallon of gas as a result of a state agency-mandated gas fee created by the Brown Administration without consumer input or legislative review. We urge you to get involved. Please contact our Director of Government Affairs, Jennifer Zins at [email protected] or 916.871.0603. Also, more information can be found at www.FedUpAtthePump.org.
CAWA Awards Scholarships to 11 Individuals Seeking Careers in the Automotive Aftermarket Industry
See the enclosed (here) list of students who received scholarships this year. All three states, California, Nevada and Arizona were represented in the scholarship awards. The Mort Schwartz Award was granted to Ashley Strunk, who attends the Universal Technical Institute, as the individual rated highest among all applicants in 2014. CAWA raises scholarship funds throughout the year and conducts an auction at its annual dinner meeting the Sunday night before AAPEX/SEMA Shows (November 2, 2014). If you are interested in giving a cash donation or prize for the auction, please contact Jeanette Lorenzo, of NAME, Inc., this year's chair of the fundraising committee. Jeanette can be reached at [email protected] or 619.300.7657.
Health Insurance Grandmothering Bill Signed: Takes Immediate Effect
SB 1446 (DeSaulnier) has been signed by California Governor Edmund G. "Jerry" Brown, Jr. to provide some small employers with non-grandfathered health insurance policies in effect as of December 31, 2013, i.e., the option to renew their existing coverage for one year, rather than be required to move to new coverage by the end of 2014. SB 1446's extension will be of direct help to some small California employers who opted to early renew their health coverage in 2013. Many of these employers were facing above normal increases under the new ACA plans in 2014. SB 1446 only applies if the small business had not already purchased an ACA-compliant policy. If you need help to understand the new law or have questions, please contact our insurance partner at Armstrong & Associates, Mat Nabity at (916)286-0918 or [email protected].
Want to Save Money on Your Workers Compensation Premiums?
See the enclosure (here) highlighting California CAWA member discounts by our A+ rated insurance company partner, Preferred Insurance Company of San Diego. Contact Glen Dailey of Armstrong and Associates at 800.575.6891. These discounts are for CAWA members only and in 2013 members saved thousands of dollars on their premiums!
2014 Dues Non Deductibility Statement
For federal income tax purposes, CAWA dues may be deductible as a business expense but not as a charitable contribution. CAWA estimates that 11% of your dues for 2014 are not deductible as a business expense because they are attributable to lobbying as is in accordance with Internal Revenue Code Section 6033. Contributions to the Political Action Fund are not deductible as a charitable contribution or as a business expense for federal income tax purposes. For more information, consult with your accountant or tax attorney.
