Interpreters Get Their First Trade Magazine!

Prove me wrong. Please. I have been trying to find another trade magazine for interpreters and I have failed.

To the best of my knowledge, our friends at Cesco Linguistic Services have made history by publishing the first trade magazine for interpreters. The Professional Interpreter has made history in another way: it is the first all-online interactive trade magazine for interpreters. So it's a double-first.

We are honored by the news because the CEO of Cesco, Giovanna Carriero-Contreras, is a licensed trainer for The Community Interpreter and also our most active trainer. At last count she had conducted 10 sessions in the last year alone!

Congratulations, Giovanna. This is a moment of birth, and we're sure you're a proud mother. Thank you for this gift to the industry--and for honoring me by having my interview in your premier issue!

The National Museum of Language Is Closing!

So you didn't know we had a National Museum of Language? Neither did I. And I must blush because the museum is just a half-hour from my office, at the alma mater of my younger son.

Sadly, open since 2008, the museum will close on September 30. It was a tiny museum, true, already reduced from three display rooms to two. At least it plans to make its contents available online. Still, it seems a loss to those of us who love language.

BOOK(S) OF THE WEEK
Interpreters' Anatomy of a Civil Lawsuit
Ramn Del Villar
Homes at Your Fingertips, 2013

English and Spanish interpreters and court interpreters in general, especially in the U.S., may appreciate this in-depth view of a civil case. The purpose appears to be to help interpreters prepare themselves for the complexity of the judicial process with a focus on the terms of art and the procedural rules that apply to litigation.
