In Memoriam

Memorial Service at CommunityWise for Ursula Brown, Founder of an Original Group at the Old Y

Ursula Brown passed away peacefully aged 86 on August 6. Founded by Ursula, the Calgary Association for Social Change was among the first groups to have an office in the Old Y building - in Room 307 - after the YWCA moved out in 1971. A single mother, she was a pioneer social justice activist, advocating for the rights of other welfare recipients, and others in need and difficulty. She was helped by her daughter Kimberley, a member of JAWS, currently an external member of CW. Two of CASC's mottos were: "LET RIGHT BE DONE" and "For the Needy, not the Greedy."

CommunityWise and Kim are looking for others with information about Ursula's past work based at the Old Y: please contact them, preferably well in advance of the memorial service. In Ursula's name, donations may be made to CommunityWise (current incarnation of the Old Y building tenants' association). Memorial service and celebration of life to be held at CommunityWise from 2-6 pm., Oct. 12, 2014.
