News and Reflections from Farmer Tom

Bees are Buzzing on the Farm

"If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live."

-Albert Einstein

According to the Xerces Society, one in three mouthfuls of food and drink require the presence of a pollinator. Beekeepers have been struggling to maintain their bee population.  There is no lack of bees here on the farm, though. The buzzing is all around us, the air is filled with a low, continuous, almost eerie hum. It's hard to pinpoint where the bees are working and the buzz is coming from exactly. Now that the apples and wild mustards are past their peak blooming period, the bees have moved into the "wilder" oak, redwood, and native chaparral environments of the farm.

Rebecca's Recipes

Greetings all,

I am so in love with green garlic - I say, eat it everyday.  Here are some reasons why it is so good for you (besides tasting so good!). Green garlic can help lower cholesterol and thins the blood, which prevents stroke, high blood pressure, and heart disease. It is good for the heart and circulatory system. Green garlic has immune boosting qualities - allicin, the sulfur compound found in garlic that is responsible for the pungent smell and taste - is a natural antibiotic. It helps improve digestion, with warming and purifying qualities. The pulp can also be used topically to help reduce swelling and prevent infection. Have a beautiful Spring-filled week full of vibrant food!

Seeking Pick-up Location in Palo Alto

During the last Regular Season we had to stop our downtown pick-up location at Vino Locale, a convenient location for many years. We'd like to deliver to a second location in Palo Alto, ideally around the downtown or University area again. If you, friends, or a local  business, church or organization in the area might be interested to host a pick-up location, please let us know. There are a few responsibilities that come with it but also some nice perks. Please email the office at farmers@cruzio.com if you can help us with this.  Thank you!
