April 28, 2016 Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Sixth Sunday of Easter.

Rev. Ellen will celebrate and preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

The Season of Easter

The Easter Season lasts until Pentecost Sunday, which will fall on May 15 this year.

The vestments and altar cloth during the Easter season are white, signifying the joy of Christ's resurrection. Two symbols for Easter are the Paschal Candle and holy water, which represent the light and new life of Christ's resurrection and the water of our baptism and rebirth.

Emmanuel's new Family and  Youth  Minister: David Jackson, seminarian

Our seminarian and his wife Stacey have decided to stay with us here at Emmanuel!  I'm excited to announce that he will take on the role of Family and Youth Minister.  David will keep his full time job and minister here very part-time.

David will be taking the conference room as his office and will be overseeing Christian formation and Youth Group along with pre-marital counseling and leading marriage enrichment programs.

David and Stacey, we are so happy you are here!!!

Peace, Ellen+

Musicale
Music Lovers, you are invited to a Mom's Day Eve Musicale

Place: Emmanuel Episcopal Church
Date/Time: Saturday, May 7 @ 7pm

Come treat mom (or just you and your friends)
Cellist Steven Sigurdson
to an amazing evening of solo cello music that she'll (and you'll) absolutely love. And don't worry - mom will not say, "But it's Mothers Day!" because it's NOT!  All proceeds from this outstanding performance will benefit the Kensington Arts Center - a dynamic setting adjacent to Emmanuel Episcopal Church that promises to bring the entire community together with outstanding arts education for all ages and levels. Suggested donation: $20.

The May 7th program will be comprised of the first three Suites for Unaccompanied Cello by J.S. Bach. A brief reception with cellist Steven Sigurdson will follow his performance. Sigurdson, a Juilliard graduate, was raised in the La Grange area, and he currently resides here with his wife and son as he continues his vibrant performing and teaching career.

Remember: Everything's better with Bach cello suites!

See you on May 7th!

Saints of the Week: Saint James and Saint Philip

Feast Day: May 1

J ames, Son of Alphaeus: We know nothing of this man except his name, and of course the fact that Jesus chose him to be one of the 12 pillars of the New Israel, his Church. He is not the James of Acts, son of Clopas, "brother" of Jesus and later bishop of Jerusalem and the traditional author of the Letter of James. James, son of Alphaeus, is also known as James the Lesser to avoid confusing him with James the son of Zebedee, also an apostle and known as James the Greater.

Philip: Philip came from the same town as Peter and Andrew, Bethsaida in Galilee. Jesus called him directly, whereupon he sought out Nathanael and told him of the "one about whom Moses wrote" (John 1:45).

Like the other apostles, Philip took a long time coming to realize who Jesus was. On one occasion, when Jesus saw the great multitude following him and wanted to give them food, he asked Philip where they should buy bread for the people to eat. St. John comments, "[Jesus] said this to test him, because he himself knew what he was going to do" (John 6:6). Philip answered, "Two hundred days' wages worth of food would not be enough for each of them to have a little [bit]" (John 6:7).

John's story is not a put-down of Philip. It was simply necessary for these men who were to be the foundation stones of the Church to see the clear distinction between humanity's total helplessness apart from God and the human ability to be a bearer of divine power by God's gift.

HinsdaleUPDATE: Hinsdale Chorale to Perform at Emmanuel May 1, 2016

The Hinsdale Chorale is a non-profit and educational organization comprised of dedicated professional and amateur singers led by a professional director.

The group performs formally twice each year as well as several special appearances for the Hinsdale community.

The Holiday show has traditionally been the most extensive performance, often highlighted  by orchestral accompaniment of solo and choral selections and including an audience sing-along.

The second formal show takes place in the spring and has provided the opportunity for us to extend the range of music selections. The group also supports the Memorial Day services at Memorial Hall with patriotic selections, and participates in Hinsdale's annual Christmas Walk featuring Holiday favorites.

BRAVO, LEO!

Soak in an evening of music-making that celebrates American composer, Leo Nestor, whose works evoke the sound and style of modern American choral writing.  April 30, 2016.

William Ferris Chorale

Dr. Leo Nestor, former music director of the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and faculty member at the Catholic University of America, will be the honored guest of the William Ferris Chorale as we present a concert of his sacred choral works on Saturday evening, April 30th at 7:30pm at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Chicago.

Joining with the Ferris Chorale will be four of Chicago's most distinguished organists, a large brass and percussion ensemble and two guest choirs (The Tower Chorale of Western Springs and the Choir of Our Lady of Mount Carmel) numbering some 100 voices.

Included on the concert program will be Nestor's Magnificat, An American Triptych (thrilling settings of How Firm A Foundation, How Can I Keep From Singing, and Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing), Two Spirituals ( Let Us Break Bread Together, Were You There?), Four Motets on Plainsong Themes
