Ageless Beloved: Works by  Abbie Rabinowitz
HoldOil on canvas.  16" x 16"  2014
May 16-July 8| Ives Gallery
Painting what is personal is a way for Abbie Rabinowitz to tap into the universal.
Ageless Beloved shows a series of oil paintings completed during her MFA program at Western Connecticut State University in 2015. Living at home, she chose to paint her parents as her thesis subject since they played such a big part in her daily life. These studies of her elderly parents express the love, intimacy and affection that they still shared for each other in their 90s. Willing to share private moments, her parents were comfortable posing in the nude. The act of posing actually allowed her parents to rekindle their affection. Her paintings are about the experience of intimacy in old age, the acceptance of being cared for and the vulnerability in losing one's independence.

Art Exhibition: Jaime Kriksciun and Ryan Cyr
March 12 - May | Fair Haven
Jaime Kriksciun's interest is in the artistic interpretation of her surroundings in an attempt to better understand them. Nature has been a huge source of curiosity and investigation. Using a variety of mediums including glass, paper, paint and yarn she presents her audience with a visual stimulus to evoke a sense of wonder about the topic at hand. Learn more at www.jakriksciun.com.
Ryan Norman Cyr is a multi-dimensional artist and a discriminating observer of media. His artistic drive is geared toward processing the chance happenings of everyday sight and sound, and documenting the results. Searching for the poetic subtleties of spaces that are often passed unseen, he draws inspiration from peeling paint, marks made by city workers, and rust oozing from the cracks of walls. Meet NHFPL Librarian: John Glendon

John  Glendon has been with the New Haven Free Public Library for 19 years! Before coming to New Haven, John worked for 5 years at the New York Public Library where he launched one of the Library's first pages on the World Wide Web in 1992 called

Newspapers of the World!

For 10 years John has served as case worker for the Red Cross. He has responded to over 60 fires in New Haven County and been deployed to half a dozen disasters across the U.S. (His photo is from his October 2015 trip to South Carolina where he assisted in flood rescue efforts.)

John holds a dual MA in Library Media and Library Science from Southern Connecticut State University. In his spare time, John works on cars - he can build one from the ground up and even used to race them!

1)   What is your role at the New Haven Free Public Library?

I am the Technology Coordinator at the Library. In other words, I make sure the right equipment gets to the right people. I manage the Library's computers, printers, copiers, scanners, phone system, internal networks and I recently oversaw the upgrading of our external broadband service to all our branch libraries from 20 Mbps to 1 Gb as well as the upgrading of our Wi-Fi service at all 5 locations.

2) What do you enjoy most about working at NHFPL?

Variety! Every day at the Library is different and I appreciate that there is always a challenge to be solved.

3) What book are you currently reading or is on your nightstand waiting to be explored?

I always read the latest issue of Sports Illustrated; and on a related theme, I recently read ESPN: The Making of a Sports Media Empire by Travis Vogan. (Find it here!)
