The Bay County Public Library will join members of the Bay County Islamic Society in hosting an open house for "Understanding Your Muslim Neighbor." The community is invited to meet some of the 150 Muslim families who reside in Bay County, learn about Islamic culture, and sample ethnic food.

Anyone under 18 must have a parent present in order to get a henna tattoo.

Ellis decides the only way to redeem himself is to succeed in a venture his father attempted and very publicly failed at: he will hunt the famous Loch Ness monster. Maddie reluctantly follows him across the Atlantic, leaving her sheltered world behind.

Beyond the Lens: Book and Film Series

May 17 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Book: The Life of Pi by Yann Martel and the film based on the book

Description: The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes. The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger.

Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days while lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities who interrogate Pi refuse to believe his story and press him to tell them "the truth." After hours of coercion, Pi tells a second story, a story much less fantastical, much more conventional -- but is it more true?

Special guest Paul McAuliffee from the Bay Storytellers will entertain us with tales before the film, and the film will be followed by an engaging discussion. Film and discussion location is at the Bay County Public Library. For more information, please call 850-522-2107.
