George Ella Lyon is a poet, writer, teacher and Kentucky's Poet Laureate of 2015 and 2016. She
is best known for penning the poem, Where I'm From, which has inspired thousands of writers around the world. George Ella writes, "Though I write in many forms, I am first of all a poet; which means my job is to see and sing the connections between things. The spider's web is a delicious image for this and for the wonder of something newly made from old patterns, like the sentences writers spin each day. The strength of my web comes from family, friends, words, music, dreams, mountains, and the joy of making."  (Read More)

Sponsorship of the Author Series made possible by Annette Januzzi Wick and Mark D. Manley,  with gratitude for 25 years of Women Writing for (a) Change

Alison Luterman Opens Author Series

Alison Luterman drew rave reviews at the opening event in the 25th Anniversary Author Series.  On Friday April 8th, Women Writing for (a) Change hosted the Oakland, CA poet, essayist, playwright and teacher at a free poetry reading and speaking event. Alison began Friday evening's presentation with a recital of her poem  Invisible Work, one many at WWf(a)C know well.  The room grew quiet and the audience was rapt the remainder of the evening. Alison generously answered questions about her creative process, her writing life, and her current projects.  Every writer present was inspired. "This was the most amazing poetry reading I have ever attended", I heard one woman say.

On Saturday April 9 th, Alison led 29 writers in a 3½ hour workshop steeped in song memory and titled  Raising Our Voices.  Alison guided participants on a journey of recalling songs from other time periods in their lives, and then using those memories as writing prompts. Comments and reflections on the class were unanimously positive.

The 25th Anniversary Author Series continues May 13th and 14th with Kentucky Poet Laureate George Ella Lyon. On November 4th and 5th, local novelist Leah Stewart will be here. Please join us for one or all of these events!
