Good afternoon and Happy September! With the recent earthquake in Napa Valley we've been in touch with many friends and business associates. We're happy to report that while everyone lost something near and dear to them, no one was injured. Had the quake happened at a different time of the day, it would have been a very different story.

The hardest hit by far are the small vintners, like Steve Matthiasson, who don't have their own wineries, but use custom crush facilities where they make and store their wine. Unfortunately many of these facilities are located near the epicenter of the earthquake and stored barrels fell like a stack of Jenga blocks into a big messy pile. They've been using ingenuity and techniques used by the timber industry to untangle the mess, but for some of these small vintners it is very likely the end of the line.

We often think of Napa as a playground for the wealthy - folks who made money elsewhere and then decided to buy a winery. That certainly exists in Napa and other wine regions in the world, but having worked in the Napa Valley for many years, its heart and soul is the small family owned and operated wineries - the farmers and the small producers making a few hundred cases at first and then hopefully a few thousand. These are the crazy, talented young winemakers who sell their cars to buy their first ton of fruit and few barrels - the folks near and dear to Village Vino's heart.  Please keep them in your thoughts.

We've been busy building the fall tasting schedule, which kicks off next week Tuesday - it's not Napa, but it is spectacular.

TUES SEPT 9

 WRATH WINERY

Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah

5-8PM

$15

(waived with purchase)

The wrath of Juno sent Aeneas wandering the Mediterranean in Vergil's Aeneid. For the ancient Romans, ira or wrath, was a tool of a god, an unstoppable anger driven by forces greater than man. One can argue that we see such fury in both the might of nature and the passion of art. Wrath appears in the edgy power of Robert Plant's voice and the raw wail of Eric Clapton's guitar. It is frozen into Jackson Pollock's violent splatters of paint. Wrath is in the wall of maritime fog that rolls into the Salinas Valley and the relentless afternoon winds that scream through our grape trellises.

Wrath wines represent a nexus of nature and an unbridled passion for winemaking. Welcome to Wrath.

Wrath Vineyards produces site-driven Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc from their estate vineyard and respected properties in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Their production is quite small and distribution is very limited. All of their wines reveal attitude, passion, and an inherent respect for what occurs in the vineyards.

We'll be tasting:

2013 Wrath Sauvignon Blanc, Ex Anima

2013 Wrath Chardonnay, Ex Anima

2012 Wrath Pinot Noir, Ex Anima

2011 Pinot Noir, Tondres Grapefield

2012 Wrath Syrah, Ex Anima
