May 1-7, 2016 is National Tourism Week
|
It's National Tourism Week!! May 1-7, 2016 is National Tourism Week. This week was established in 1983 by a congressional resolution to highlight how important tourism is in each community. In Yankton, tourism is our 4th largest industry. Here are some quick facts about tourism as it relates to Yankton:
- Lewis & Clark Recreation Area - up 9% in visitors in 2015
- SD residents pay $825 less in property taxes thanks to tourism!
- 1,187 jobs in Yankton County are tied to tourism
- Visitor spending in Lodging, Food/Beverage, Retail, Recreation and transportation was up 8.2% for Yankton County in 2015
We want to continue to build on our success from 2015 so the Yankton CVB has started 'Find our Great 8' campaign. The first clue in highlighting the sites chosen for Yankton's Great 8 was in the Press & Dakotan Saturday, April 30th. We will continue to share a 'clue' to our destinations through Monday, May 9. Here's what you need to do to participate - look in the Press & Dakotan each day for a clue. Figure out the clue and then stop at that location to register for a chance to win $50.00 in Chamber Dollars. One winner will be drawn from each location on Tuesday, May 10. That's $400.00 in prizes that will be given out to those who participate. And the best part, you can win multiple times! The other way you can help is to share our 'Great 8' with those who visit Yankton or ask you what is great about visiting Yankton. The full list of sites will be shared in next week's newsletter.
