Celebrating 10 Years!
April 2016

THE DEGREGORIO FAMILY FOUNDATION
CELEBRATES 10 YEARS!
A Decade Dedicated to Raising Funds to Support Critical Research Grants & Facilitating Education and Early Detection of Stomach and Esophageal Cancer.

It is with great pleasure that The DeGregorio Family Foundation announces their 10th anniversary! As we move forward to the next 10 years we will continue to strive to fund innovative research in gastric and esophageal cancer.

Since inception, The DeGregorio Family Foundation has awarded over $2 million in research grants.  Friends and family have generously funded all overhead costs, allowing 100% of the money raised to go towards grants. All grants that began with funded research from The DeGregorio Family Foundation have subsequently received additional monies from other significant funders to continue critical scientific investigations.  To date, 11 research grants have been awarded to doctors and researchers to further study stomach and esophageal cancer. For the full list of funded grants from 2006-2016, please click here

The DeGregorio Family Foundation Scientific Advisory Board is comprised of the top researchers in the field of stomach and esophageal cancer, led by Dr. Manish Shah. The Scientific Advisory Board utilizes precise criteria to determine the efficacy of the proposals as well as the standing of education/research institution and its doctors.  Studies are carefully monitored and periodic reports are submitted to the Board to track it's progress as well as expenditures. This year we received a record number of applications for grants.

The DeGregorio Family Foundation would like to thank you for your continued support throughout the years, and we are excited for what the next 10 years holds. Our goal is to strive towards early diagnosis & making these diseases treatable.

2016 GRANTS AWARDED
Congratulations to Dr. Ellen Beswick, Ph.D & Dr. William M. Grady M.
Dr. Beswick, Ph.D  & Dr Grady M.D.
D.

The DeGregorio Family Foundation awarded one of two grants this year to  Dr. Ellen Beswick, PhD. Associate Professor of The University of New Mexico Department of Molecular Genetics and Biology.  The $215,000 grant aims to further the study:  Targeting Mk2 for Treatment of Gastric  Cancer

Gastric Cancer is the 4th most common cancer worldwide with a 5 year survival rate of only 20%. It is highly associated with H. pylori infection. Infected individuals have  a 3 to 6-fold higher risk of developing gastric cancer.   Dr. Beswick and her team will examine inhibition of this pathway as a potential treatment approach to prevent and treat gastric cancer.

The DeGregorio Family Foundation, along with the Price Family Foundation, announced the recipient of the second grant this year totaling $180,000 to Dr. William M. Grady M.D., a clinical researcher and cancer geneticist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center  in Seattle, WA. Last year alone, approximately 20,000 Americans died from cancer of the esophagus. Dr. Grady will complete an extensive  Esophageal Cancer Screening Study . and  will research more effective ways to identify people at a higher risk for esophageal adenocarcinoma, the most common cancer of the esophagus.
