 PTO GRANTS

During the 2015-16 school year, your MCE PTO has worked hard to find creative fundraisers that not only helped to raise money, but also to build a sense of community at Maize Central. Through the sale of MCE spirit wear and your attendance at Spirit Nights, Skate Nights, and Movie Night, we were able to raise about $5,200 this school year!! Thank YOU!!
This $5200 was returned right back into the classrooms through teacher grants. We were able to fulfill 23 grant requests and had the privilege of presenting the recipients with their items at a recent staff meeting. It was a hit! We look forward to more great fundraising efforts over the summer and next school year, translating to more funds going right back to MCE classrooms!! Please stay tuned to our Facebook page, MCE PTO, for our next P
TO event!

As the school year comes to an end, I would like to remind you that if your student has medicine here at school, you will need to make arrangements to pick it up by the last day of school.  Any medicine that is not picked up will be thrown away.
A new medication administration form must be filled out each year.  If your child currently has an inhaler at school or is taking scheduled medication, I will be sending a new form home with them for you to complete over the summer.
If you have any questions, please give me a call.
Thanks!

Head Lice:
What Parents Need to Know

Each year millions of school-aged children in the United States get head lice. Though head lice may be a nuisance, they don't cause serious illness or carry any diseases. Also, head lice can be treated at home.

The following information from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention will help you check for, treat, and prevent the spread of head lice.

What are head lice?
Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that live close to the human scalp. Head lice can lay eggs, called nits, that hatch and cause itching and discomfort but to not spread disease.

How do you get head lice?
Head lice are mostly spread by direct head-to-head contact - for example, during play at home or school, slumber parties, or sports activities.   Head lice move by crawling. They cannot jump or fly.

My child's classmate has head lice.
Is my child at risk?
Head lice move by crawling and cannot jump or fly. It is not common for lice to spread through sharing clothing or personal items, such as combs, towels, or toys. The greatest risk of transmission is between people who have had direct head-to-head contact when one person has an active case of head lice.

How do I know if my child has head lice?
Finding a live nymph or adult louse on the scalp or in the hair is a good indication of an infestation. They are most commonly found behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head. Head lice move quickly and avoid light, so they can be hard to see.

My child has head lice. What should I do next?
There are a number of available treatments. You should talk to your child's pediatrician or family physician to discuss the best option for your family. Here are some things to consider in selecting and starting treatment:
-          Follow treatment instructions. Using extra amounts or multiple applications of the same medication is not recommended, unless directed by a healthcare professional.
-          Family bed linens and recently used clothes, hats, and towels should be washed in very hot water. Personal articles, such as combs, brushes, and hair clips, should also be washed in hot soapy water or thrown away.
-          Items that cannot be laundered may be dry-cleaned or sealed in a plastic bag for two weeks.
-          After treatment, comb nits and lice out of hair with a nit comb.
-          Do not use conditioner before using lice medicine. Do not re-wash the hair for 1-2 days after treatment.

If you would like more information, please click on the links below.
