Bob Dylan: The New Orleans Series

Proving there's little he can't do (except remember his own densely packed lyrics in concert, maybe) Bob Dylan exhibits a collection of paintings inspired by the Crescent City at NOMA this summer. The Minnesota native wrote in the first volume of his autobiography, Chronicles, "There are a lot of places I like, but I like New Orleans better. There's a thousand different angles at any moment ... No action seems inappropriate here. The city is one very long poem." His works present a city that is fluid and mysterious and not without its theatrics. On view in the museum's Great Hall from April 25 until May1. noma.org

This sweet and tangy salad will turn any spinach-doubter into a believer.

 Baby Spinach Salad with Mustard Vinaigrette
This sweet and tangy salad will turn any spinach-doubter into a believer.
Ingredients
Salad
  • 6 cups loosely packed spinach
  • 1 cup strawberries, sliced
  • ½ cup cucumber, chopped
  • ¼ cup pumpkin seeds, toasted
  • ¼ cup green onions, very thinly sliced
  • ¼ cup pecans, toasted and chopped
Vinaigrette
  • ¼ cup walnut oil, or salad oil of your choice
  • 2 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • ⅓ cup red onion, very finely minced
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Combine vinegar, red onion, honey, mustard, salt, and pepper in a small bowl or jar. Mix well with a whisk or shake the jar vigorously. Wisk in the oil or add it to the jar and shake vigorously once more.
Add spinach to a large salad bowl.
Top with cucumber, strawberries, green onion, pumpkin seeds, and pecans. Pour over salad dressing and toss to coat.
Serves 4

The inaugural NOLA Crawfish Festival is gearing up to take place April 27 in New Orleans at NOLA Brewing Tap Room, right in the midst of Jazz Fest. Presented by NOLA Crawfish King, Live For Live Music, and NOLA Brewing Company, the festival will bring together a trifecta of Southeast Louisiana perfection - the absolute best crawfish, live music, and beer the city has to offer. With top-notch talent from George Porter, Jr., Anders Osborne, Jon Cleary, Nigel Hall, John "Papa" Gros, Billy Iuso & The Restless Natives, Papa Mali, Honey Island Swamp Band, Neville Jacobs, and dozens of other local favorites in various supergroup formations, the event promises a true New Orleans experience from top to bottom.

The festival will run from 3 PM-10 PM each day. Attendees can enjoy over 5,000 pounds of hot boiled crawfish prepared on-site by Chris "Shaggy" Davis and his NOLA Crawfish King staff, 20+ original varieties of ice-cold beer tapped straight from the source, and a specialty brew created just for the event. The three-day event will conclude with the Ultimate Crawfish Cook-Off, where twenty teams will compete for the best crawfish boil determined by a panel of NOLA celebrity judges.

General admission includes one beer and a guaranteed minimum of two pounds of crawfish with all the fixings. Single day passes will be available, but a three-day pass is the best way to enjoy the full hometown experience. A limited amount of VIP passes will also be available, allowing full 360° access to a festival experience that you will never forget. Tickets are available here.

OPSO is accepting applications for Deputy Sheriff and has lowered the minimum age for applicants from 21 to 20 years of age. Applicants must also have a high school diploma or GED from an accredited high school; a clean criminal record; and have the ability to complete a P.O.S.T. correctional course and academy.

Linda Zachrison Bio

Linda Zachrison was appointed by the Swedish government as Cultural Counselor to the United States in 2015 following completion of The Saga of Gösta Berling by Selma Lagerlöf, a play she co-directed with Norwegian Director Runar Hodne for the main stage at Kulturhuset, Stockholms stadsteater.

Kulturhuset, Stockholms stadsteater which is the largest theatre venue in the Nordic Countries was also Linda's base for the previous ten years. She served on the management board of the theatre, as well as being the Artistic Director of Parkteatern, an annual three-month outdoor festival presented since 1942, reaching an annual audience of 200,000 people.

During her time at Kulturhuset, Stockholms stadsteater, Linda also developed, launched and managed a venue for international performing arts in Stockholm, under the name c/o Stockholms Stadsteater. The success was built on long experience organizing collaborative projects involving prominent international artists and ensembles appearing in Sweden for the first time, including names such as Forced Entertainment, 
Jerome Bel, Gob Squad, Les Ballets C de la B.

During the years 2004 to 2006, Linda served as the Political Advisor of the Minister of Culture and Education in Sweden.

Linda has also been a Director at the Swedish Film Institute, responsible for distribution and promotion issues in Sweden and internationally. Earlier in her career she held the position of CEO at Cirkus Cirkör, a contemporary circus company based in Sweden with a large international presence.

Linda has held a wealth of other positions within the performing arts, covering both the creative side, management, marketing/audience development and outreach. This included co-founding the Theatre Magazine Visslingar & Rop, bringing theoretical and international perspectives to the performing arts.

Linda holds an MA from Stockholm University with a double major in Film and Theater studies and Philosophy. She has been giving talks on arts and culture, cultural policies and performing arts at Stockholm University, Södertörn högskola, in Sweden as well as at Yale School of Drama in New Haven and Goucher College in Baltimore. She lives in Washington DC with her husband and five-year old daughter.

Photojournalist Leon Morris - HOMAGE: New Orleans
Please join us for a presentation and signing with award-winning photojournalist Leon Morris featuring his new book, HOMAGE: New Orleans. The book serves as a tribute to the vitality of the city's people and culture.
HOMAGE is a photographic journey through New Orleans' influence on contemporary music. This elegantly designed book includes over 300 images capturing the personalities and performances of some of the most influential and impactful jazz, soul, world, roots and blues legends of our times. Featured artists include New Orleans greats like Dr John, the Neville Brothers, Irma Thomas and Wynton Marsalis, and jazz and blues legends like Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Nina Simone, and Cab Calloway. The aforementioned images are accompanied by essays and personal anecdotes on the musicians, the music industry, the central role of New Orleans and the Mississippi Delta in the development of contemporary music, and explains the evolving role of music photography from the point of view of an artist.
In addition to spending the last 20 years at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Morris has had a photojournalism career spanning 30 years, where much of his work has been featured in prestigious publications like The Guardian, The Independent, Vanity Fair, NME, Time Out London and received multiple Kodak Photographer awards.
 
ABOUT LEON MORRIS
From 1982 to 1994, Leon worked in London, quickly building up a high profile photography career that saw him regularly published in prestigious publications from the Guardian, Independent, Observer newspapers, to a range of magazines and journals including The Face, Vanity Fair, New Statesman, Architects Journal and Creative Review. In the music world, Leon was a regular contributor to NME, The Wire, Melody Maker, Smash Hits and Q Magazine. Leon is a recipient of multiple awards including First Prize Greater London Council Photography Competition, 1983; Kodak UK Fine Art Photography Award, 1987; Kodak UK Young Photographer of the Year, 1988 and runner-up for the Kodak European Young Photographer of the Year, 1988. In 1989, the Victoria and Albert Museum appointed Leon as their first photographer-in-residence and BBC Television's cutting edge arts program, the Late Show, profiled Leon as one of Britain's leading young exponents of photojournalism. Other awards include first prize in the Docklands photography competition in 1991 respectively, and the "Highly Commended" title for two years in a row in the Edinburgh Photography Competition. In 1994, disillusioned with the role of the photographer in the evolving media industry, Leon Morris returned to Australia, from where he has continued to return to New Orleans each year. His documentary and music collections are held by the two highly respected London agencies, Hulton and Redferns respectively. Both these agencies are now part of Getty Images.

American Sector is proud to present Landry Vineyards

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - The American Sector Restaurant + Bar in The National WWII Museum has announced its next dinner in the Dinner After Dark series. "A Night with Landry Vineyards" will take place on April 27, 2016 at 7:00 PM. The 5-course dinner prepared by Executive Chef Eric Cook, surrounded by the ambiance of the Stage Door Canteen, will feature the wines from the West Monroe, Louisiana winery, Landry Vineyards.
Cook will begin the evening with a seared scallop with blackberry merlot glaze, lemon and gremolata, accompanied by a Cajun 75 cocktail of peach muscadine wine, Bombay gin, ginger and orange. The first course of oxtail spring-rolls is served with pickled red onion, braised purple cabbage and redneck demi-glaze. A Redneck Manhattan-Redneck Red, Maker's Mark and Peychaud's Bitters-pairs well with the oxtail. For the second Course, Chef Eric will prepare whole roasted shrimp "Creole," a local muscadine lacquered shrimp with quinoa and spring tomatoes, and served with the Bayoutage White Blend. Charred Wild Boar with white bean cassoulet, caramelized cipollini onions, and blackberry backbone jus meet the Bayoutage Red Blend for the meat course. For Dessert, Chef Eric poaches a pear in Cotton Rouge wine, accompanied by St. Andre cheese, almond brittle and cinnamon biscotti, and served with a glass of Cotton Rouge.
"Our garden to table menu at American Sector pairs nicely with these local wines," states Cook. "It is our aim to create food that is inspired by both regional and Southern favorites, and Landry Vineyards shares that spirit. We hope you will come in and see for yourself why local is always better." Landry Vineyards, located in the hill country of West Monroe, was established in 1999 by the Landry family. The wines are distinctive to the region while complimenting the rich, flavorful Cajun foods of Louisiana's French Acadian Heritage.

This Wednesday's Jazz @ the Sandbar welcomes trumpeter Maurice Brown. Brown will perform with the Self Actualizers combo directed by Brian Seeger and the Thelonious Monk Ensemble directed by Steve Masakowski. 
 
Grammy award winning trumpet virtuoso/super-producer Maurice "Mobetta" Brown stays busy with a wealth of projects, recording dates and concert appearances that will keep his fans abuzz with anticipation. When Maurice picks up his horn, his trademark soulful melodies soar into a rarefied space that uniquely marries traditional be-bop to hip-hop, producing a sound where neither genre is watered down.
 
Since his highly celebrated 2004 debut album "HIP TO BOP" hit the jazz world with a staggering original sound, Brown continued to explore and expand all musical boundaries with his 2010 release "THE CYCLE OF LOVE." Jazz @ the Sandbar was established in 1990 by Ellis Marsalis, the first Coca-Cola Endowed Chair of the Jazz Studies Program at UNO. Preservation Hall's annual  Midnight Preserves series during Jazz Fest welcomes prominent artists from a variety of genres to join the  Preservation Hall Jazz Band for intimate midnight concerts within the walls of our hallowed venue in the heart of the French Quarter. Past guests have included Jimmy Buffett, Shovels and Rope, Alabama Shakes, Robert Plant, The Del McCoury Band, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and dozens more.

CITY ISSUES REMINDERS IN ADVANCE OF THE 2016 NEW ORLEANS JAZZ AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL
 
NEW ORLEANS - With the 2016 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival open at the Fair Grounds Race Course on April 23, the City is reminding the public about the procedures and requirements for selling goods and public parking in the festival's vicinity. This year's festival dates are Thursday, April 28 to Sunday, May 1.

"Celebrating its 47th year, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival is one of the most authentic cultural experiences in the world," Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. "Jazz Fest attracts hundreds of thousands of revelers to the Fair Grounds and is only getting bigger and better. This year, we encourage all residents and visitors to make a plan before heading out to Fair Grounds to enjoy a day of music, food and culture. As in previous years, City enforcement officials will be on site to ensure that local businesses are in compliance with City ordinances. Our goal is to make commercial business owners and non-profit managers aware of the rules and regulations, and to eliminate confusion in advance."

COMMERCIAL BUSINESS ENFORCEMENT
City code requires that commercial businesses get the appropriate permits if they wish to operate on their commercially-zoned property during the festival. In the event that a non-profit organization plans to manage a parking service on commercial property, they must also apply for a permit. Fees associated with permits for parking operations are $265.25 for a business and $30 for a non-profit organization. 

In addition, existing businesses will be allowed to sell their products on their property, both inside and outside of their business contingent upon not blocking the public right-of-way. However, the City will aggressively enforce the rules that prohibit transient vendors (carts, trucks, etc.) from improperly selling their products within the festival's "Clean Zone."

The Clean Zone is a temporary designation that seeks to protect the quality of life for residents and assists businesses in thriving during the 2016 Jazz and Heritage Festival. Simultaneously, the designation will facilitate a tremendous positive economic impact on the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana through the regulation and control of certain areas in order to provide for the public health, safety, and welfare of thousands of residents, visitors, dignitaries, and media personnel who will attend events.

The Clean Zone is bounded by Florida Avenue on the north, North Broad Avenue on the east, Esplanade Avenue on the south, and Bayou St. John on the west (excluding the portion of that area contained within the exterior boundaries of the New Orleans Fair Grounds Racetrack). The Clean Zone is in effect beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2016, and ending at 7 a.m. on Sunday, April 24, 2016. The Clean Zone will go into effect again at 6 a.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2016, and ending at 7 a.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2016.

The City of New Orleans' One Stop Shop for permits and licenses is open during regular business hours, Monday - Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Click here for more information  or call (504) 658-7100.

GETTING TO JAZZ FEST
The Fair Grounds Race Course is located at 1751 Gentilly Blvd. in a residential part of the city offering restricted parking in surrounding neighborhoods. Festival-goers that are driving to the Fair Grounds are encouraged to bicycle, carpool whenever possible, park in downtown long-term lots and use the shuttle system festival organizers have arranged or to take public transportation.
 
Additionally, because the Wisner Boulevard Bridge Overpass is closed to the public for construction, festival goers should seek alternate routes when travelling to and from the festival.

Bicycling
Festival attendees planning on riding bicycles to the Fair Grounds are encouraged to utilize the City's designated bikeways.  Click here for a map of the City's bikeway network.

Bicycle parking is available by the Gentilly Pedestrian Entrance at the corner of Gentilly Boulevard and Sauvage Street.  Click here for a map of Jazz Fest.

Jazz Fest Express Shuttle Service
Gray Line Tours will operate continuous round-trip transportation - the Jazz Fest Express - from the Sheraton Hotel, the Gray Line Lighthouse at the Steamboat Natchez Dock (Toulouse Street at the River - next to Jax Brewery and City Park (next to Marconi Meadows) daily from 10:30 a.m. until all patrons have been transported from the Fair Grounds.

A special entrance will be used only by Jazz Fest Express vehicles to avoid traffic and bring festival-goers inside the gates of the festival.

The City anticipates a high volume of ride requests for Transportation Network Companies (TNC) and TNC for-hire vehicles, such as uberX and Lyft, during the festival. In an effort to minimize interruption to Uber and Lyft service and reduce passenger inconvenience, TNC's will direct passengers and drivers to meet at a location outside of the restricted traffic zones.

JAZZ FEST PARKING ENFORCEMENT
Parking enforcement personnel will be monitoring for illegal parking, including blocking hydrants, driveways and sidewalks, or parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, intersection or stop signs. Motorists are reminded to park in the direction of travel on one-way streets, and with the right wheel to the curb on two-way streets. Motorists are highly encouraged to pay close attention to all posted signage to avoid being ticketed or towed.

The City's Parking Control Officers will be actively enforcing the following safety violations:
  • Blocking a fire hydrant ($40 fine)
  • Parking in a fire lane ($40 fine)
  • Parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant on either side ($40 fine)
  • Parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, intersection, or stop sign ($40 fine)
  • Parking on a sidewalk ($40 fine)
  • Parking on a traveled portion of the roadway ($40 fine)
  • Parking within 3 feet of a driveway on either side ($40 fine)
  • Parking on the neutral ground and subject to seizure ($75 fine)
  • Parking adjacent to the neutral ground ($40 fine)
  • Parking in freight/loading zone ($40 fine)
  • Parking in a handicapped zone without proper permit displayed ($500 fine)
  • Parking at an expired meter ($40 fine)

NORDC CONTINUES MOVIES IN THE PARK THIS WEEK
 
NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) will continue the 2016 spring season of Movies in the Park on Friday, April 22, 2016 with "Inside Out" (2015) at 7200 Forshey St. New Orleans, LA 70125, hosted by Norwood Thompson Booster Club. 
 
The Movies in the Park series features free, family-friendly outdoor movie screenings at NORDC playgrounds for residents across the City. NORDC partners with playground booster clubs and community organizations that help promote the events.
 
The movies will begin at sunset, between 7:15 and 7:30 p.m., weather permitting. Moviegoers are encouraged to arrive early for fun fitness activities with instructors from Fit NOLA at NORDC.
 
The screenings are free and open to the public. Moviegoers are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics.

CEO of Southern Theatres and New Orleans Recreation Development Foundation Board Member George Solomon contributed nearly $50,000 to the Movies in the Park program. This support will be used for industry licensing, marketing, and new equipment and supplies.

American children's author and illustrator, Tomie dePaola, said, "Reading is important, because if you can read, you can learn anything about everything and everything about anything." What better way to instill a love of reading to a child than to read to them everyday. 
St. Bernard Parish library strives to bring reading alive to children through interactive storytelling. "Tales on Tuesdays" will return this winter and spring , and will run through May 3 at 1 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. The program takes place at the Chalmette branch at 2600 Palmisano Blvd. 
The earlier program is geared for younger listeners. The evening session is open to children of all ages, but will target school-aged children. This program is free and sessions run about 45 minutes. "Tales on Tuesdays" is intended to introduce children to literature through storybooks, poetry, flannel boards, finger plays, and participatory activities.

CITY TO HOST NEW ORLEANS SUMMER CAREER PATHWAYS PROGRAM ORIENTATION STARTING TOMORROW
 
NEW ORLEANS - Tomorrow, April 26, 2016, the City's Network for Economic Opportunity and JOB1 will kick off its New Orleans Summer Career Pathways Program orientation to provide training and employment opportunities in the advanced manufacturing and energy sectors. 
 
In October 2014, the U.S. Department of Labor committed $8.2 million to support workforce development and training in New Orleans. Of that, a $5.8 million competitive grant went to the City of New Orleans Office of Workforce Development and a $2.4 million grant went to Delgado Community College for workforce development.
 
The City has leveraged the grant to improve the delivery of workforce training services, facilitate cooperation across federal, state and local workforce programs and funding streams and expand partnerships within industry sectors to develop programs that reflect current and future skill needs.
 
The City's Office of Workforce Development is working with a variety of training providers and community partners and organizations to customize training programs for local workers interested in obtaining certification in trades in the advanced manufacturing and energy sectors. In addition to education and skill training, participants will be provided with the wrap-around supportive services needed to increase completion and experience in real work settings to gain nationally recognized industry certifications. 
 
Tomorrow, the first Summer Career Pathways Program Orientation will take place at the Young Men Olympians Club House, 2101 S. Liberty St. Each orientation will last from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
 
Career training will be offered in industrial maintenance, electrical and pipefitting.

Both grants, as part of Department of Labor's Workforce Innovation Fund, seek to improve job training programs across the country. Delgado was one of 270 community colleges around the country who received a total of $450 million in federal job-driven training grants. This funding was part of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) competitive grant program, which is co-administered by the Department of Labor and Department of Education.

CITY TO HOST RECYCLING DROP-OFF DAY ON SATURDAY
 
NEW ORLEANS - The Department of Sanitation will host its  Recycling Drop-off Day , from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the City's Recycling Drop-Off Center at 2829 Elysian Fields Ave. Recycling Drop-off Days will be held for Orleans Parish residentson the second Saturday of each month.


Items accepted at all monthly Recycling Drop-Off Days include: paper (newspaper, magazines, office paper, junk mail, phone books), ink jet cartridges, toner cartridges, digital cameras, DVRs, digital picture frames, metals (aluminum, steel, tin), laptops, stereos and speakers, plastics (#1 through #7), printers and fax machines, telephones, cords, systems, cell phones, beepers, pagers, uninterruptible power supplies, security systems, computers, processors, monitors, circuit boards, GPS devices, Xboxes, PlayStations, Wiis, MP3 players, DVD movies and video games, household batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, incandescent light bulbs, Mardi Gras beads, microwave ovens, televisions (limit 4) and tires (limit 4).
 
Household hazardous waste materials will not be accepted at this event. Additionally, the City does not accept glass for recycling at the Drop-off Center or curbside except in the French Quarter or DDD.
