COOL (Children Overcoming the Obstacles of Life)

Decorated masks line the hallway of the COOL section of the Center's building
Every year the Center serves up to 800 children and adolescents (ages two - 20) through a unique  practice  we've developed called, COOL (Children Overcoming the Obstacles of Life). COOL is an experiential approach to counseling that integrates play, art and physical movement to help young people communicate their inner life.

Mask-making is one example of a therapy technique utilized by the Center's COOL counselors. Because a mask has an outside and an inside, young ones are presented with a tangible way to explore the persona they reveal and the persona they conceal by decorating both sides of the mask. In describing their artwork to their therapist, children and adolescents might say:

"On the outside people see me as happy and funny."

"On the inside I hide my fear that things will not get better."

A skilled counselor utilizes the mask-making exercise to help process traumatic events and painful feelings. This photo depicts some of decorated masks on the wall in the COOL section of the Center's building.

What is pastoral counseling?

This is the first in a series of articles on pastoral counseling and spiritual direction. While this introductory article will explore the idea of "pastoral counseling," the rest of the series will profile individual counselors and spiritual directors at the Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center.

Pastoral counseling is not that different from other counseling or therapy. Counseling, including pastoral counseling, is a way of dealing with personal or relationship concerns, issues, or problems that a person encounters in their life. Adding the word pastoral to counseling adds a sense of openness to airing spiritual questions, and pastoral counselors may have a greater comfort level with dealing with those questions though all clinicians can be attuned to the spiritual. An important note to go with pastoral counseling is  that there is openness to the spiritual questions being asked but the client has to ask the questions because the counselor will not automatically assume the client wants to talk about matters of faith.

Did you know cardiovascular disease can trigger depression? Counseling and medication can help. If you have experienced a cardiac event or diagnosis, you may wish to ask your doctor for a referral to a qualified mental health professional.

The Des Moines Pastoral Counseling Center's in-house psychiatry team (see photos right) can work with your doctor to treat your cardiac-related depression. For more information on the Center's psychiatry services, call 515-274-4006 or email [email protected].

For more information on how heart disease and depression are linked, we'd like to pass along this article from the American Heart Assocation.

Redefining Aging, a conversation series

Thank you to everyone who came to help us launch this series through our wine and cheese gathering on April 14.

We are hosting three more conversations and you are welcome to join us. Not a class, not a support group, this conversation series will explore ways to reframe common misconceptions about a universal experience: growing older. While pop culture tends to focus only on the losses that come in this time of life, we will consider the significant opportunities.

Participants will discover new ways to express their values, creativity and spirituality - in a joyful and supportive community.
