May 2016: Issue No. 6
memorial_day10.jpg

Dear Fairview Library Community,

Welcome once again to Fairview Public Library's monthly newslet ter.  The American naturalist, Edwin Way Teale, once said that "The world's favorite season is the spring. All things seem possible in May."  Ideas are fresh like the flowers and trees blossoming.  The weather is mild and the days are getting longer.  And, how lucky we are, the month ends with a holiday.

For many Americans, Memorial Day signifies the beginning of summer, the opening of the neighborhood pool, and a time for picnics and barbecues. In the midst of these festivities we can, however, overlook the holiday's true meaning. Memorial Day was first observed in 1868 in remembrance of those who died in the Civil War; since then our Nation has set this day aside as a solemn occasion to pay tribute to the men and women who died securing our Nation's freedom.

In between the possibilities and the memorializing, remember the library: here to inform you as a citizen, a student, an observer and a participant in life.

Sincerely,

Kristin Nelson, Library Director
