Student Earns Scholarship
in Support of Military Veterans
London Aguillard is pictured with Rite-Aid Executives as she is awarded her scholarship in September

One of the ways Rite-Aid supports military veterans is by providing scholarships to their dependents that attend private school to help with the cost, and to allow the child to continue to receive a great education. Fourth grader, London Aguillard wrote an essay this past Spring, explaining how her family changed after her mother's diagnosis of brain aneurysms. She expressed how much she loved her school and didn't want to go to another school. "Then at the end of the summer, God stepped in and blessed us with this scholarship.  We are so grateful!  London was so excited! God is so so so good to us. This was another example of God telling me, 'Stop worrying, I'll handle this!'" ~Roxanna Aguillard, mom of London Aguillard

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
KICKS-OFF THIS WEEK!

The collection and distribution of shoe box gifts is a project of Samaritan's Purse.  Over 124 million shoe boxes filled with gifts have been sent to boys and girls around the world since 1993.  Last year our school and church together collected 5,007 shoe boxes.  This year we hope to surpass that number.

During chapel this week, students were shown a video explaining the
significance of the project and encouraging students to bring in shoe boxes filled with
gifts.  Shoe boxes were made available to all students from preschool through high school.  The deadline for shoe boxes is Friday, November 20, 2015.

Thank you for helping to make this project possible to demonstrate God's love to children around the world.

AN HOUR OF CODE

Computers are everywhere, but few schools teach computer science. The good news is, we're changing this.

With the Hour of Code, computer science has been on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. Over 100 partners joined together to support this movement. Last year, every Apple Store in the world hosted an Hour of Code and even President Obama wrote his first line of code as part of the campaign.

That's why every one of the 1044 students at ELCA are joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Dec. 7-13.

The Hour of Code, organized by the nonprofit Code.org and over 100 others, is a statement that today's generation of students are ready to learn critical skills for 21st century success.
MODEL UNITED NATIONS
Negotiating solutions for global challenges is the primary goal of Model United Nations. Twenty-nine ELCA high school students participated in the Georgia Tech Model United Nations Conference October 12-13, representing the countries of Peru and Switzerland. To prepare for the conference, the students met weekly to practice public speaking, diplomacy strategies, writing position papers and other important skills.  Casey Wang serves as President of this year's team, and she led all of the training sessions and even hosted a mock conference at her home on a Saturday.  The next conference is scheduled for November at Georgia State. Model United Nations is open to all high school students. Contact Mrs. Jagus in room 242 for further information.
FIELD TRIPS - at home and away
Digger Dog and Maria from Georgia 811 came to visit ELCA's second grade on November 3, 2015. Digger Dog entertains the students while they learn why it is important to call 811 before digging. Maria guided the students through Power Town where they learned about the dangers of electricity.  Georgia 811 is a free service to mark all underground utilities before one digs. "Call 811 before you dig!" said Digger Dog.

Fourth grade students took a trip to Legoland Atlanta on November 5. Among all the attractions in Legoland, students were asked to create a story with Legos. Troy Hosford and Caden Thomas created the story of Jesus' birth!
