Connecticut Ag Day at the Capitol
By proclamation Governor Daniel P. Malloy will declare Connecticut Agriculture Day to be Wednesday, March 19th, 2014.

Often referred to as  "Ag Day at the Capitol", it is a day for the citizens of Connecticut to reflect upon and be grateful for the men and women who make agriculture in our state possible. On the third Wednesday of March each year, the Connecticut Ag Information Council, CAIC, coordinates this event. They bring together farming associations and organizations from all across the state to gather at the Capitol in Hartford representing their different commodities and industries as testimony to the legislature that agriculture is a vital part of our history and Connecticut's future.

The CAIC will also announce their 2014 winner of the "Outstanding Young Farmer" Award and present their annual "Ag Journalism" Awards. The event is free and the public is welcome.

Sharing the Joy

Roni Widmer was selected as one of 3 CT recipients of Morris Media Group's Green Award. Roni invites school aged children to her back yard which she has turned into a hands-on, farm based learning center.

"The kids are amazingly attuned to what goes on," Roni says. "They get it. And those that come in the spring want to come back in the fall; all they want to do is be outside and dig in the dirt."

Blue eggs?

In our last newsletter, we included a photo of locally-laid blue eggs which were laid by Araucana chickens. This breed originated in Chile and the egg color is reportedly caused by a DNA retrovirus. These blue-colored eggs have the same nutritional benefits as white or brown eggs.
