The 5th Streets Alive! Ithaca is happening on Sunday, September 7, 1-5 pm. This fall's route will take you on a short tour of the Southside neighborhood of Ithaca.

Streets Alive! is a non-profit biannual event hosted by BikeWalk Tompkins and Way2Go. The streets are closed to cars and open to people. It is a celebration of being active and all the ways that can happen. It is a festival of movement that attracts several thousand people who come ready to bike, walk, roll, and dance in downtown Ithaca. Bring your wheels, bring your friends and family, tell your neighbors, and make your streets come alive! Free and open to all.

Volunteers and activity hosts are still needed to make the event a success!  Sign up today!

So how is carshare doing anyway?

People ask this all the time and
we are pleased to say - pretty well!

Since 2008 our active member base has tripled from 500 to 1,500 and we've grown from 6 to 24 vehicles. While we relied heavily on grant support from NYSERDA at launch, our basic operations are now self-supported by our rates. Check out this recent Ithaca Voice interview with Executive Director Jennifer Dotson for a closer look.

Even better news comes hot off the presses from the Transportation Sustainability Research Center at UC Berkeley. Their annual Innovative Mobility Carsharing Outlook lays out the numbers. In the 6 years since Ithaca Carshare started up, carsharing membership in the Americas has more than quadrupled while the number of carsharing vehicles has nearly tripled to a total of 1.4 million members sharing 21,000 vehicles!

 Rethinking rideshare

Emerging ridesharing technologies are pretty cool, spelling a bright future for one of the cheapest ways to travel by car: the
good old fashioned carpool.

CarmaHop in Lawrence, Kansas aims to make hitchhiking smarter and safer using a smartphone app and social media platform. Their Facebook page will take you down the rabbit hole of exciting and fascinating news and videos related to transportation and the shared economy.

Shared peer taxi services like Uber and  Lyft are gaining traction in more and more cities. If you've got a car and some extra time, you can sign yourself up as a driver. Riders can 'hail' a car with an app, and a driver who is also using the app rushes over to pick them up. Earlier this month Lyft launched a new product, Lyft Line, which pairs multiple riders into the same trip, a move which we think makes the whole concept even cooler than those fuzzy pink mustaches!

So what can we do here in Ithaca, where these nifty services haven't quite arrived? 58% of commute trips within Tompkins County are drive-alone trips, and ridesharing is one of the highest impact ways we can reduce that number.

ZimrideFirst, get on Zimride Tompkins, a free ridesharing website that matches you to others going the same way.

Or, consider putting together a vanpool or carpool with your neighbors or coworkers. A little coordination and collaboration can go a long way in saving you money on your commute, and reducing the number of cars on the road every day!

Ithaca Carshare

For years, Ithaca Carshare has been helping Ithacans choose to bike, walk and use the bus for everyday trips, and providing fuel-efficient vehicles for backup. We've been helping to reduce the money that leaves Ithaca by offering a less expensive way to use a car only when you need it, and created the Easy Access plan as a more affordable option for folks on low incomes.

We'd love your help in doing all this, and are ecstatic that we can now thank you with a tax-deductible receipt!
