MARCH 2016 RING REPORT

Ring 199's Friday magic luncheon meetings are facilitated by Danny Reeves. While everybody was indulging in vinegar and oil on their salads, Mike Gorman performed an Oil & Water effect using only four cards and demonstrated a "Poker Deal" card effect based upon simple math. Gorman then caused a "black hole" card to penetrate two crisscrossed dollar bills. There is never a dry eye among onlookers due to laughter when Gorman uses a deck of cards to illustrate a hilarious "Cowboy" tale.

Kevin Reylek did a fantastic jaw dropping "pick-a-card-pick-any-card" routine which culminated with the spectator cutting to his own card. The venerable prolific card-wielding Danny Reeves performed card effects entitled "It's Magic Time", "Truth or Lie", and the "Pistol Card Trick." Xan Innes' card effect called "Hide & Seek" (where aces find the jacks) left everybody agasp with amazement.

Prompted by the approval of his peers, Innes continued with a card trick encore with a memorized deck routine based on Lennert Green's "1- 2 Color Separation". Steven Perry's performance of Michael Skinner's effect "Red Fibers From a $20 Bill" was very realistic. Perry also performed his version of the famous "Sam, the Bellhop" storytelling routine. Rick Denatale performed Jon Armstrong's "Tiny Plunger" routine wherein the small plumber's friend was used to find a card.

In lieu of having a regular April 2016 meeting, Ring 199 hosted its 39th Annual Magic Auction. Fred Rosenbaum, Sarah Moseley, David Trustman, and Steve Perry all served admirably as auctioneers. This was one of our most successful auctions!

Upcoming event: "FAMILY FLING" on May 7, 2016. In this annual event, family members and friends are invited to partake in a potluck dinner and watch club members compete in contests.

Ring 199 normally meets on the first Saturday of the month. The exceptions for the remainder of 2016 will be July 9th and September 10th.

MAGIC YOUTH RALEIGH

Nine members attended the April Magic Youth Sessions. Roger Way led hands-on lessons covering vanishing coin effects and the classic Miser's Dream. We watched a video of Chris Capehart's fun version of Miser's Dream. The students received their own Dream buckets, half dollars, coin hank, and other related props. The I.B.M. will soon be welcoming nine new international youth members!

Our sincere thanks to Jon & Kelly Ferrante and The Magic Corner for hosting our youth sessions! Couldn't do it without you!

Roger Way, Youth Director

Hi, Everyone,

We had a very exciting group this past Friday. In attendance were: Virginia Olmsted, Rick DeNatale, Mike & Pattie Gorman, Steven Perry, Danny Hinton, a very nice visitor Kimberly Corrigan (Welcome, Kimberly. We hope you come to visit us again real soon.) and me. We engaged in some great magical discussions and saw some very good magic. Rick performed an effect turning a dollar bill into a mismade dollar bill where the corners become the middle of the bill. Steven performed a gamblers' routine as well as pulling the silk fibers from a $20 bill , thereby making it a counterfeit bill. In another effect he was able to correctly determine under which one of six cards a coin was hidden, not once but twice. Mike performed a 4-Ace routine. He also did cash prediction and performed lazy man's handcuffs. He showed us a dollar bill puzzle where George vanished from it. I performed an effect using a deck of ESP cards twice (failing EACH time. Of course I did this on purpose so as to make the others look good  J ). We all had a lot of fun. We will meet again at Cary's Crossroads Sweet Tomatoes on on Friday afternoon of this week at 1:00.  Hope to see you there,

          Danny Reeves

HELP!  CARD MAGICIAN NEEDED
The Magic Youth Group is still searching for one or two accomplished card magicians to oversee the intermediate to advanced card magic classes on a consistent monthly basis. These classes have been discontinued due to the lack of a dedicated mentor or mentor team.

This mentor may set his own schedule to meet with the card kids at either The Magic Corner Magic Shop or prior to the monthly Ring meetings at New Horizons Fellowship.

The General and Beginner Magic Classes are still taught by Skip Way on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, 6:00-8:00 PM at The Magic Corner.

Please contact Skip Way at [email protected] if you are interested in assuming responsibility for the card magic classes.

HOUDINI & DOYLE AIRS MAY 2nd ON FOX
At the turn of the 20th century the Metropolitan Police were overwhelmed with bizarre cases so they turned to outsiders including world famous Magician Harry Houdini and author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This 19th Century dynamic duo collaborated with New Scotland Yard on some unsolved and inexplicable crimes.

The long awaited miniseries is a British-Canadian television drama series based on the friendship of  Harry Houdini  and Sir  Arthur Conan Doyle . A 10-episode first season was ordered by  Fox  in the United States,  ITV  in the United Kingdom, and  Global  in Canada.  The pilot episodeis set to air on  Monday, May 2nd at 9:00 on the FOX Network

The series stars  Stephen Mangan as Doyle,  Michael Weston as Houdini, and  Rebecca Liddiard as Scotland Yard Constable Adelaide Stratton.  Houdini is a skeptic who doesn't believe anything unless he can see it himself. Doyle is a believer who wants to prove that the supernatural is real. (Holy Mulder and Scully!)

The drama opens in 1900, shortly after the publication of Doyle's book
The Great Boer War. Houdini and Doyle become involved in the investigation of several mysterious deaths. They argue over whether the causes are natural or supernatural, and often wager on the cause, which causes their police liaison, Constable Stratton, some embarrassment..

Set your DVRs! You won't want to miss this exciting fictional tale based very loosely on a fabled friendship.
NOW YOU SEE ME 2 OPENS JUNE 10
Though the Four Horsemen's repository of illusions and tricks are often much more intricate and complex, a standard deck of cards has and always will be an iconic companion to any magician. Bringing the gang together, today's all-new poster for  Now You See Me 2 upholds that tradition by placing its leading players in a house of cards.

Those Four Horsemen will comprise the familiar faces of Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson and Dave Franco, along with new recruit Lizzy Caplan as fresh-faced trickster, Lula. Making a triumphant return to the stage following a year-long absence, the group are soon foiled by the brilliant mind of Walter Mabry, son of Michael Caine's corrupt insurance magnate and played by newcomer Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame.

Jon M. Chu is the director behind the lens, and only yesterday we caught wind of Lionsgate's plans to  push ahead with Now You See Me 3, which Chu will also helm. Details for the threequel remain under lock and key for the time being, but a successful turn at the box office in June coupled with the return of Eisenberg and Co. will ensure NYSM3 is a done deal.

Now You See Me 2 will whip up a spell or two when Jon M. Chu's magical sequel appears in theaters on June 10
