The new 2014 Indiana Building Code was published as a proposed rule by the Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission on April 1, 2014, and is expected to become effective before the end of the year. The new building code will adopt by reference the 2012 International Building Code, and include Indiana amendments.
The seminar will provide a broad survey of the principle fire and life safety related changes proposed in the 2014 Indiana Building Code versus similar provisions in the currently adopted 2008 Indiana Building Code, primarily as they relate to architectural building design. The changes covered will include the model International Building Code changes in the 2009 and 2012 code change cycles, as well as those occurring within the proposed Indiana amendments. The seminar will cover relevant material in Chapters 1-31 of the building, including a cursory review of changes in Chapter 11 concerning accessibility.

AIA Indiana Wins National Award!
AIA Indiana was presented a 2014 AIA Component Excellence Award in the category of "Public Affairs and Communications: Outstanding Single Program" during the 2014 AIA Grassroots event in Washington D.C. on March 21, 2014, for the creation of the "FAQ - Tornado Refuge Areas in Existing Indiana K-12 Schools" guide document. This document was created in partnership with the Indiana Department of Education after the deadly 2012 Henryville tornado.
The guide - which has been sent to every school district throughout the state - provides information to help schools identify the safest areas within their school buildings in the event of a tornado.
More than a dozen Hoosier AIA architects with experience in school design and building safety, along with representatives from the Indiana Department of Education and consulting engineering firm Lynch, Harrison & Brumleve, Inc., volunteered their time to develop the resource for Indiana school leaders. As a result, many schools within the state have put new tornado safety plans into place.
The award jury expressed that this was a very unique program. "The reason why professionals in other industries look upon architects with such respect is because of programs like this. The document AIA Indiana produced will save students' lives. The benefit to the community is immeasurable and priceless."
