Greetings Blazeman Warriors and Friends,

Here we are at yet another May without knowing what triggers ALS in the people we love...I am sure I am not the only mother that keeps asking why. What makes a healthy young man or woman suddenly start having the symptoms that eventually gives them the diagnosis of ALS? May 2nd will be the 11th anniversary of Jon's diagnosis and May 27th the 9th anniversary of his passing...as I write this newsletter the memories leading up to both days are foremost on my mind...
Our new website is up and running...please visit us and send us a note, we would love to hear from you. www.waronals.org

Jon always loved this picture and focusing on a picture of him living life to the fullest is what we have...missing you Johnny B!

Our huge thanks again this year to Carrie McCoy, Brett Jenner, the Energy Lab and Phil Gormley for rounding out our Cycle for ALS events! You have all been with us for the long hall and we appreciate that more than you know! The dollars raised is earmarked for our future research projects that we are currently looking at.
Coming up in June is Barry Sopinsky's Deathride Tour more info  Thanks, Barry!!!!!

A big thanks to David O. Baldwin for allowing us to use a picture of Carrie's roll that made the paper in Hawaii!

Carrie had 2 cycle events this year...the second one took athletes through the bike course of the IronmanWC in Kona...where Jon put a face on ALS for the world to see...

In Carrie's own words...
"Today I had the privilege to run and ride on The Ironman course for Jon and so many ALS warriors... it was humbling to ride the course in which he defied the odds on. I saw him riding out there as the wind fought our return back to Kona... and thought "he rode this with ALS". As I ran down Ali-hi drive I envisioned the day he ran down into the finish line to roll across a line many doctors believe...d he'd never reach.. and because of his courage and fight he started a movement in the endurance community that has funded over 1 million grants to find a cure. I have run down that finish line before... but today it wasn't my memory I saw, but his. Today we rode for Jon, for David, for Danny Hopper, for Andrea Lytle Peet and for many of the ALS Warriors who have fought and fighting this disease. It was a small first group today, but I promise you next year it will grow and we will continue to form here in Kona, where Jon earned his title and ride until there is a cure."

So Others May Live !!!

  Till Next Time...

The Greater Hartford 1/4 Marathon was held on Saturday April 2nd, organized by Kelly Burns Gallagher. This year was the 10th annual and the 9th race that benefited the BMF. Thank you Kelly for your continued and much appreciated support!
A shout out to Denise Cassella, who wore #179 this year at the race...

In Denise's own words about race day...

Thankfully, I took a selfie... I am so honored to wear Jon "Blazeman" Blais' Bib #179 for the 10th Anniversary of the Greater Hartford 1/4 Marathon this past Saturday, April 2, 2016 and see his Sister, Jen!!! I wore the Blazeman Warrior visor and longed sleeved running shirt. I ran through the entire race (and finished) while it rained and poured, in the cold 39 degrees, of a so called Spring morning! It took me over two hours after the race to thaw out as I was chilled to the bone! This was a fun and well organized race that I will do over and over for the War on ALS, and to promote the Blazeman Foundation for ALS where 99% of the proceeds goes toward finding a cure!!!

On May 2, 2005, twenty-year Multi-Sport veteran Jon Blais a.k.a. "Blazeman" at age 33 was diagnosed with the fatal motor neuron disease ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). Blazeman dubbed himself the "ALS Warrior Poet" and brought his battle to the big island of Hawaii on October 15th that year, where he became the first person with ALS to complete the Ironman World Championships. It was his last race. In 2006, a number of athletes, inspired by Jon's 2005 efforts, rolled across the finish line in Hawaii in honor of Jon and his battle against ALS. In 2007, the Blazeman Foundation for ALS expanded Team Blazeman, comprised of "Blazeman Warriors" who have committed to raising awareness and funding a search for a cure for ALS..."So  Others May Live."
