The Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce and PNC Bank are pleased to announce that Margaret Lundell Wells will be honored October 1, 2014 as the 2014 Outer Banks Citizen of the Year. The award presentation will be made at the Chamber's Annual Meeting & Awards Dinner 6:30 p.m., October 1, 2014 at the Ramada Plaza in Kill Devil Hills.
Margaret moved to the Outer Banks in 1987 as a personal banker with Wachovia; she was promoted to Branch Manager of the Southern Shores office and later to retail loan administration officer and Vice President in 1995. From 1995-2000, she was named Top Producer in the Region, was given the Wachovia Spirit award for community service, and was elected to the Wachovia Mortgage Hall of Fame. She officially retired from Wachovia in 2000 as a Senior Vice President with 30 years of service.
She walked with the NC Power/Dominion Power team in the March of Dimes starting in 1987, and was on the March of Dimes board of directors from 1988-1998; she served as Finance Chair, raised in excess of $50,000 annually for the team walk and was inducted into the March of Dimes Hall of Fame.
She joined OBX Home Builders in 1990 and was the Associate of the Year in 1997. She helped implement the Home Builders Care Project, which put volunteer contractors in local schools to complete needed projects and renovations. She served on the Board of Directors and was instrumental in the Home Builders purchasing their own building.
Margaret was an Associate Board Member and member for the Interfaith Community Outreach and took over the Chairmanship of the Golf Tournament in 2008-2010 and has been instrumental to the recent success of the tournament.
Margaret was asked to join the Outer Banks Hospital Board in 2003 and served as a Member of the Executive Committee from 2009-2012. She was a Founding Member of the Hospital's Development Council and Chairman of the first OBX Hospital Gala that raised more than $120K towards the opening of the Hospital's Cancer Resource Center, and raising more than $300K from 2006-2008. She also served as an inaugural member of the Get Pinked Committee, which has raised $85K to provide mammograms for those in need.
She joined the Outer Banks Chamber in 1987, and has served on the Board of Directors for three different terms in the last 25 plus years. She was named Ambassador of the Year in 2012/2013 and Ambassador of the Month several times and has been a major contributor to the success of the Reverse Raffle and the Annual Golf Tournament. She also served as a board Member for Kitty Hawk Kiwanis and North Banks Rotary
Margaret has been married for 32 years; she has three daughters and three grandchildren (and a cat named Stewie, who still lives at home). She was born in Goldsboro and has lived in NC her whole life, and has lived in Kitty Hawk since 1987.
"Any time that we have needed someone to help with a fundraiser or community project, Margaret has been quick to raise her hand," said Outer Banks Chamber Board Chair Mike Pringle. "Her track record proves her commitment to being involved in the Outer Banks community and making a difference."
The Outer Banks Citizen of the Year Award has been given annually to individuals who have a track record of for outstanding contribution to the quality of life of the Outer Banks area.
The Outer Banks Citizen of the Year award will be presented at the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce's Annual Meeting along with Outer Banks Non-Profit of the Year, Chamber Member of the Year, New Member of the Year, and Individual Ambassador of the Year. The evening includes a celebration of Chamber accomplishments and goals, the exchange of the chairman's gavel and board of directors, music by SoulOne, and a buffet dinner.
